| | | 'Lynch/Oz' is a Revelatory Reflection on a Cinematic Romance | | por Will DiGravio Sep 29, 2022 | | This article is part of our coverage of the 2022 edition of Fantastic Fest, taking place from September 22-29. In this entry, Will DiGravio reviews Alexander O. Philippe’s latest documentary, Lynch/Oz. Follow along with our reviews, interviews, and features from the fest in our Fantastic Fest archive. The sounds and images of few filmmakers linger in one’s mind like those of David Lynch. Entering a Lynch film for the first time, one knows they will see colors and hear things in ways they could never expect. Such moments may later return to us in a dream or when we encounter a similar gesture in real life, carrying with them horror and beauty. It is the great simultaneity of Lynch’s style. It is fitting, then, that all interested in Lynch’s work should think about the images and sounds that inform his psyche. Such is the premise of Lynch/Oz, the revelatory new work from director Alexandre O. Philippe. Viewers may already know Philippe’s past work, which includes 78/52, a 91-minute study of the Psycho (1960) shower scene. Or perhaps Memory: The Origins of Alien, the story behind Ridley Scott’s 1979 masterpiece, and Leap of Faith: William Friedkin on The Exorcist. Philippe’s work is rooted in a deep respect for the moving image and, in particular, how the creation of cinema can transcend time and space. Truly great works live on forever, bringing with them the images and sounds that inspired them and inspiring new ones along the way. Skim through a summary of Lynch/Oz, and you might think the premise is a bit boring and on the nose. At its most basic level, the film is a study of how The Wizard of Oz (1939) influenced the life and work of Lynch. One need only glimpse a few minutes of Wild at Heart (1990) to understand that Victor Fleming’s film, based on a novel by Frank Baum, is perhaps the essential influence on Lynch’s art. Lynch himself, as the film notes, has said not a day goes by without him thinking of Oz. But Phillippe and his team, including the film’s superb editor, David Lawrence, have anticipated such rebukes. The film successfully avoids the pitfalls of its deceptively basic premise and instead becomes about so much more. Beyond the relationship between Lynch and Oz, the film contemplates the impact of movies on children, the labor of filmmaking, the life and tragic death of Judy Garland, how filmmakers connect with their audiences, and the impact of Lynch’s work on others. Nor does the film feel like an overly indulgent study in auteurism or psychoanalysis. Lynch/Oz derives its credibility from its use of multiple voices. Phillipe wisely divides the film into six different parts to provide various perspectives. Contributors include Amy Nicholson, Rodney Ascher, John Waters, Karyn Kusama, Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead, and David Lowery. Each offers their own take on Lynch’s work, the land of Oz, and the relationship between the two. The reflection of Waters, a contemporary of Lynch’s and another Oz-obsessed filmmaker, emerges as particularly effective. That he buys into the film’s premise adds yet another layer of credibility. Kusama’s section provides a similar effect. As a filmmaker who learned the craft while watching Lynch’s work, she provides a critical perspective, playing the role of artist, critic, historian, and fan all at once. It is a fitting approach for a work like this. One could imagine a written version of this work, but the use of film language itself makes it all more immersive and convincing. The film’s contributors appear only through voiceover in the film. Each of their tones, presumably through Phillipe’s direction, strikes a perfect balance between authoritative and casual. They offer their points of view in ways that feel more like open-ended reflections. At no point do they sound like some final, irreproachable lecture on Lynch’s work. The voiceover style recalls other aspects of contemporary moving image culture focused on remixing and analyzing the work of others. Fans of video essays, for example, will find a similar approach in this film. The film effectively employs supercut-like montages, multi-screen comparisons of films, and superimposition. Images from a Lynch work and images from Oz, for example, often become one. Phillipe has a tremendous sense of structure. Given the ways that Wild at Heart wears its associations with Oz on its sleeve, it is easy to imagine a version of this film that over-relies on that one work to its own detriment. However, Lynch/Oz in no way uses it as a crutch. Phillipe brings Wild at Heart in at the right times. He waits until well into the film to deal with it in full. One could even imagine a version that makes no reference to Wild at Heart yet remains as compelling and convincing. The film collects seemingly direct references to Oz in Lynch’s work. Such moments include red shoes, characters named Dorothy, a desire to go home, etc. But also offers a more philosophical take on the relationship between the two. So, what is it about Lynch and Oz? By the film’s end, the contributors and the filmmakers offer several answers, but one is particularly compelling. It is through Oz that Lynch, whose surrealist influences make his films sometimes impenetrable, more palatable. It is through Oz that Lynch finds a populist cinematic language. He connects with those who wondered in amazement at Oz and continues to learn from its lessons today. It inspires us just like it inspired him. Because just like home, there is no place like the world of David Lynch. | | | | | 'Interview with the Vampire' Offers a Dark and Delicious Revision To A Familiar Story | | por Valerie Ettenhofer Sep 29, 2022 | | Lestat de Lioncourt is the drama. The undead lover, killer, and perpetual center of attention was the drama when he was introduced in Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire in 1976, he was the drama as embodied by Tom Cruise in the 1994 film adaptation, and, dear God, is he ever the drama in AMC’s enjoyable latest take on the vampire epic. In the new series, which reimagines some aspects of Rice’s story while staying true to its sumptuous and thrilling core, Sam Reid gamely takes on the role of Lestat, while Jacob Anderson plays his fledgling vampire better half, Louis. The well-cast pair lead viewers through a new version of a familiar story, one that’s winkingly funny, delightfully bloody, and thoroughly entertaining. While Rice’s series took place in the late 1700s, series creator Rolin Jones’ update of the series pushes the story forward to the early 1900s, setting its events against a backdrop of clashing sensibilities, traditions, and inequality. Even before he’s turned into a vampire, Louis is the topic of public fascination: he’s the lone Black businessman in his New Orleans neighborhood, where he runs brothels and looks after his mother and siblings. When he meets Lestat, a provocative and mysterious French businessman, his life is quickly turned upside down. If you’re unfamiliar with Rice’s series, suffice it to say that Louis and Lestat’s charged and theatrical relationship goes through some memorable rough patches over the course of several decades, all of which form the basis of the story. The series gets its title from the frame narrative, which is among the most noteworthy differences between the new show and Rice’s books. Instead of telling his story to a young reporter in the ‘70s, as in the novel, we see Louis recount the tale to an aging journalist (Eric Bogosian) whom he’s already met once before. By positioning their interview as a revisionist look back at Louis’ story, the series opens up the door to plenty of meta-commentary, with Bogosian’s no-nonsense reporter interrogating some of the romanticized and even problematic plot points that have always made Rice’s works magnets for debate. Like the vampires at its heart, this story has adapted to survive major changes in the world around it. On the whole, the new version of Interview with the Vampire excels at both embracing the elements that make it a major touchstone in the vampire canon and presenting them with a sense of mischievous self-awareness that’s often downright hilarious. The series has the camp, sexiness, and gleefully presented gore of a show like True Blood but also possesses the scope and occasionally straight-faced melodrama of a story that knows it was the blueprint for the good, the bad, and the ugly of modern vampire cinema. For all its central couple’s dysfunction, Interview with the Vampire itself is never ugly, especially in episodes directed by The Sopranos and Mad Men filmmaker Alan Taylor. The series indulges in visuals that reflect the sensibilities of its aesthete antiheroes, and its beauty is hypnotic. The show is aces at presenting each of its loveliest things – from Lestat’s fanciful manner of speech to Louis’ suddenly lavish lifestyle to the glowing reddish eyes of their eventual adopted child, Claudia (Bailey Bass) – as just one shiny side of a dangerous double-edged sword. Interview with the Vampire often handles its dark topics with a surprisingly playful touch, but it’s also sure to impress upon us the fact that beauty and decadence can belie danger. Maybe it’s the turn-of-the-century time frame talking, but it seems like this version of Louis and Lestat’s story doesn’t just embody Rice’s work: it also calls to mind the literature of a known member of the Decadent Movement, Oscar Wilde. It isn’t entirely glossy, though. The new series is certainly more thorough and intentional in its exploration of 20th-century queer life than the Neil Jordan film, which relegated its central relationship mostly to subtext. If the latest version of Interview with the Vampire has a weakness, it’s that it doesn’t try to cater to viewers who haven’t cracked open one of Rice’s books. This is, frankly, a weird and wild story that walks a wobbly tonal tightrope and probably won’t be for everyone. But it’s also hard not to get hooked, especially by lead performances that burn bright. Anderson, who stole scenes in Game of Thrones as Grey Worm, here artfully conveys the spirit of a man who’s often torn apart by the needs and expectations of everyone around him. Reid, meanwhile, is a fabulous Lestat, slipping effortlessly into a character who’s at once extremely charming and extremely punchable. Interview with the Vampire hits the ground running with five episodes that deliver camp, comedy, carnage, and a generous helping of sincere romance and drama. The show has a lot of ground to cover, yet already seems like it could be game to go beyond Rice’s first installment and make a meal out of the rest of The Vampire Chronicles. In the meantime, though, it’s clear that the story of Lestat, Louis, and Claudia is quickly shaping up to be a bloody good time. Interview with the Vampire debuts on AMC and AMC+ on October 2, 2022. This entry reviews this year’s surprise secret screening, Werewolf by Night. Follow along with our reviews, interviews, and features from the fest in our Fantastic Fest archive. Secret screenings at Fantastic Fest are tricky animals. In the days building up to their reveal, attendees buzz with their best guesses. Some years they nail it. In other years, it’s a swing and a miss. When Rian Johnson and Karina Longworth were spotted walking around the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar, whispers went out like prayers speculating a Glass Onion showing. Of course, Johnson and Longworth were probably just there celebrating their bud Noah Segan’s directorial debut, Blood Relatives. Other best guesses belonged to M. Night Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin and Hulu’s Hellraiser (aka Huluraiser). At no point did I hear rumblings about a Marvel Studios appearance, and when the festival’s director of programming Annick Mahnert announced Werewolf by Night to the crowd (underscored with a howl roaring from the PA system above), an odd murmur rippled through the theater. Marvel Studios at Fantastic Fest? For some, it just doesn’t gel. The films most lionized at this particular festival are the maniac curveballs; the movies where crazed security guards have sex with gold-dipped Lexuses (H4Z4RD), or where kung fu puppets burst into bloody, wet explosions (Demigod: The Legend Begins). The Avengers seem too tame and universally cherished to win over the FF audience. And, yes, I did see some people walk out immediately. Their loss. Frankly, Werewolf by Night is very much a Fantastic Fest fright. Director Michael Giacchino has made a very goofy yet loving tribute to the Universal and Hammer horror monster movies of his youth. He’s working in the confines of camp, a decision that could alienate Marvel die-hards and detractors alike. Imagine a trailer ripped from Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s Grindhouse anthology film and extended into a feature or an hour-long Halloween special. While it’s nowhere near as bloody or exploitative as Machete, Werewolf by Night is not absent of gore either. When honoring Hammer horror, you need blood and lots of it. Werewolf by Night‘s action sequences feature severed limbs, spliced skulls, arrows penetrating throats, and getting stuck in the meat below the tongue. The violence is more John Wick than Dawn of the Dead. The cuts are quick; the CGI blood even quicker. Still, I can’t imagine Captain America or the filmmakers in charge of him relishing in so much bodily mayhem. Giacchino doesn’t have much runtime to play within. Werewolf by Night is a glorified television episode where a gaggle of monster hunters gathers at Ulysses Bloodstone’s funeral. Jack Russell (Gael García Bernal) is championed above the others, having supposedly scored more than a hundred kills in his time. Elsa Bloodstone (Laura Donnelly) is the estranged daughter of the deceased. And the rest look cool but barely get enough screen time to be anything other than menacing. Each killer is present, hoping to inherit the Bloodstone that gives the family their ominous name. The jewel is a mighty weapon designed to send the world’s monsters to their graves. Only the best of the best should have access to it, and to decide its ownership, the Lady Verusa (Harriet Sansom Harris) holds her own Hard Target sporting event switching out Jean-Claude Van Damme for the swampy Man-Thing. What these hateful hunters don’t know is that one of their own hides a hairy secret. The titular werewolf, the guy with a dog’s name. Gael García Bernal spends the film’s first half playing it mellow. His Russell stands quite small next to the freaks around him, and they regard him as a curiosity, certainly not a threat. When everyone finally has their cards on the table and Russell is released of his secret, Bernal injects a smiley-faced bravado into the proceedings. The werewolf itself has more in common with Henry Hull’s Werewolf of London from 1935 than any other cinematic lycanthrope. KNB EFX Group provides the beastie, and he is a tangible brute. Bernal’s bottom teeth pop over the top lip. His brows are sharp and pokey. Mostly, his eyes are raging. The transformation is not necessarily what you’ve seen before, with Giacchino taunting our expectations by simultaneously showing and withholding the incident. Clocking in at under an hour, Werewolf by Night does leave you wanting. It’s an action affair; as such, you only catch glimpses of character, but what you see is appealing. Where the plot leaves the surviving folk suggests a great change for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Jack Russell and Elsa Bloodstone might not be ready for primetime Avenging, but it’s easy to consider either character appearing in a Doctor Strange sequel or the upcoming Agatha Harkness Disney+ series. Also, Man-Thing. We need more Man-Thing. The gargantuan bog behemoth steals every sequence in which he appears. Werewolf by Night reveals just enough about the creature to establish him as a lot more than a wannabe Swamp-Thing, the competition’s more popular muck monster. Man-Thing is a staple of Marvel’s more supernatural publication corners, but too often, the red-eyed fear-eater gets dumped in forgettable work. Thanks to Michael Giacchino, Marvel now has an opportunity to pump a little strategy and purpose into their Man-Thing plans because everyone walking away from Werewolf by Night will demand more. Marvel’s first “Special Presentation” is a monster mash. You can sense Giacchino’s glee in each frame. He’s jammed everything he loves about the genre into one singular expression. We’ve got transformations, cursed objects, cheeky sadism, jump-scares, and extreme closeup screams. Werewolf by Night is always winking, but don’t mistake its meta mind for inauthenticity. Michael Giacchino is one genuine dude, and he’s deadly serious regarding the world and characters. Werewolf by Night premieres on Disney+ on October 7th. | | | | | |
| | | Armor Wars Movie Now in Development Instead of Disney+ Series | | por Tyler Treese Sep 30, 2022 | | The Don Cheadle-led Armor Wars Disney+ series has been changed into a movie with a theatrical release. RELATED: Black Monday’s Yassir Lester Tapped as Head Writer for Marvel’s Armor Wars According to THR, Marvel Studios decided that a theatrical release was a better way to tell the story that they wanted. Yassir Lester, who was the head writer on the series, will write the movie’s script. No director is currently attached, but the report states that the move will push Armor Wars “further down the development slate.” Cheadle previously said that production on the project will begin sometime in 2023. As for its place in the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, Cheadle revealed that Armor Wars would take place right after the events of the Disney+ series Secret Invasion. Originally written by David Michelinie and Bob Layton and running for seven issues from December 1987 to June 1988, the comic story centered on inventive genius Tony Stark as he discovers that the same top-secret tech he used to create the Iron Man armor is now in the hands of several deadly supervillains and is wracked with guilt over the evil they’ve done utilizing the suit. In the face of objections from his government, friends, colleagues, and fellow superheroes, Stark swears to use the power of Iron Man to bring this evil to an end and take back what’s his. RELATED: Disney CEO: Armor Wars Will Scratch Fans’ Itch ‘For More Iron Man’ With Robert Downey Jr.’s Stark being dead in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the two-time Oscar nominee seemingly retired from the role, it’s currently unclear as to how the series will approach the material or update it with Cheadle’s Rhodes at the center of the story. Yes, even more than last week’s episode, which is titled, “Just Jen”. The show continues to dive into the dynamic between Jennifer and her superpowered other half, particularly the complications and insecurities that stem from it. In some ways, “The Retreat” is even more self-contained than “Just Jen”, though there’s some substantial character growth and a villainous tease at the end. 1. A New Crew Earlier in the series, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law briefly introduced the Wrecking Crew, a group of would-be thugs that tried and failed to attack the hero. One member, Wrecker, returns in this episode, but he’s quite different compared to the last time we saw him. Thanks to the life coaching at Emil Blonsky’s retreat, Wrecker has emotionally evolved, and he takes responsibility for his actions. But he’s not alone; Emil is also working with others, and they all come from the comics. RELATED: She-Hulk: Attorney at Law Episode 7 Recap, Theories, and Thoughts Jennifer bumps into Man-Bull and El Aguila rather violently; they smash her car during a fight, which Emil calls a way to work out their resentments in a safe environment. Aguila’s debut is particularly noteworthy because he’s a mutant. He has the power to channel energy into his sword, and beyond his charm as a swashbuckling villain, Aguila is remarkable because he’s one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first mutants. Fans have seen them pop up here and there recently in Ms. Marvel and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Namor will join the lineup in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. In the grand scheme of things, Aguila may not be as significant as some of the others, but his mere presence demonstrates the growing population of mutants in the MCU, which is bound to change the status quo sooner rather than later. 2. Group Therapy The heart of this episode comes in an emotional scene where Jennifer opens up during group therapy. Emil is hosting a session for Aguila, Man-Bull, Wrecker, Porcupine, and Saracen to work through their issues. Jennifer, in her She-Hulk form, accidentally stumbles into it, and while she initially dismisses the process, she eventually delivers what could be considered her most heartfelt moment of the series. She describes how, as She-Hulk, she can literally transform into the more popular friend one had in high school. In doing so, she can make her life easier because everyone likes She-Hulk more. But this pattern hurts Jen; everyone overlooks her and practically casts her aside. She questions whether people would still like her if she was just Jen. Speaking through tears, she also says that Jennifer is great, but nobody seems to care. Here, Jen makes a major breakthrough. Aguila and the others embrace her and tell her that she’s surrounded by a group of guys that would like to spend time with Jennifer, rather than She-Hulk. She bonds with them, and she even tries out Emil’s sweat yurt after she says she’s “hurtin’ for a yurtin.'” In the end, the group gives her a card and tells her they love both Jennifer and She-Hulk. This moment substantially progresses the narrative of the show; one of the core focuses has leaned on Jennifer’s struggle to balance her human life with her identity as a superpowered individual, and Emil’s retreat helps her in this regard. 3. Ghosted with a Twist Jennifer’s breakthrough comes as a consequence of some heartbreak. As seen in the previous episode, she met Josh, a nice guy, at her friend’s wedding. “The Retreat” opens with a montage that’s right out of a Rom-Com, as they go on multiple dates and eventually sleep together. But when the fairytale ends when Jennifer wakes up the next day and Josh is gone. She texts Josh about how she can’t stop smiling, but he doesn’t reply. Jennifer then goes to Emil’s retreat, which doesn’t have cell signal or Wi-Fi, so she can’t tell whether Josh texts back. Her monologue in the group therapy session kicks off with her talking about Josh and his lack of contact, and the group encourages her to block his number because he ghosted her. Jennifer takes their advice, but the situation is more complex than it seems. In the closing moments, after Jennifer happily leaves the retreat, we get a flashback that rewinds to the night she hooked up with Josh. As it turns out, Josh is up to no good, beyond his perceived ghosting. While Jennifer was sleeping, he copied the data on her phone to his, and he also took a picture of her. He then sends emojis of a syringe with blood in it, a vial with Gamma green fluid in it, and a thumbs up to “HulkKing”. This is the latest tease of some nefarious scientists targeting She-Hulk, and one can only imagine what dastardly plans they have in store moving forward. “The Retreat” is both a self-contained episode that feels fairly inconsequential, given its intimate settings and an installment that notably moves things along by having Jennifer make meaningful progress in her attempt to embrace her superpowered self. The reveal of Josh’s betrayal at the end sets up an exciting next step while Daredevil’s looming arrival is sure to leave fans looking forward to next week’s episode. While no official casting announcements have been made, a statement by Fleischer on joining the project seems to confirm that Jesse Eisenberg and Woody Harrelson — who starred in both films — would be returning to the project for its third entry. It’s unclear at the moment if other stars who have appeared in both films, including Mark Ruffalo, Dave Franco, Michael Caine, and Morgan Freeman, will appear in this film in any capacity. “There are three things in this world I absolutely love … Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, and magic,” said Fleischer in a statement. “To have the chance to work with these two talented actors, as well as rest of the incredible cast of the Now You See Me movies, is a dream come true. The game’s PR only specified that the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC versions were hitting that date, failing to mention the PS4 and Xbox One ports. We’ve reached out for clarification on those versions and will update this article if we get a response. With the theatrically released rom-com dying out in recent years, this is a victorious return to the genre, offering some of the loudest laughs and heartfelt love stories we have seen from Hollywood in a long time. Eichner does away with the gay best friend of rom-coms past and depicts a gay relationship with loving passion. As co-writer of the film, Eichner brings a lot of his voice into the character he portrays. The protagonist is Bobby Lieber, a podcaster and museum curator who’s out and proud. He uses his platform to comment on the LGBTQ+ community humorously and is helping plan a museum about their history. As he works on all of this, he meets a macho lawyer named Aaron and the two begin an unlikely relationship. This is all handled to near perfection with a script that lands on every level. This movie is funny — that’s all a comedy should do. Luckily, Bros delivers on the belly laughs with an excellently written screenplay and lots of humorous direction from Nicholas Stoller. The humor in this film works so well due to the fantastic comedic timing from Eichner and his co-stars. It offers a detailed, uniquely hilarious representation of gay men while jabbing at the differences between sections of the LGBTQ+ community. Bros never fails to provide some of the year’s biggest laughs, including a surprisingly well-timed Maroon 5 joke. It’s a superb comedy, but is it a good romantic comedy? Affirmative. This is a beautiful romance story told in the funniest way possible. The chemistry between the two leads should not make sense, but it does. It offers some of the best sex scenes ever put to screen, plus you get a feel for how these two complement each other — even if they are not perfect. Eichner and Macfarlane are magic together, and the rest of the cast is hilarious in their roles. The supporting cast is excellent, making nearly every character easy to like.
The biggest drawback to the rom-com is the structure and how most follow a formula. If you have seen any romantic comedy of the early 2000s, you know what will generally happen in this film because it’s a very familiar love story. However, Bros works due to its amusing humor and lighthearted exploration of LGBTQ+ individuals. However, the film knows when to pull back, with one scene where Eichner’s character delivers a sad monologue about growing up gay and how people perceive him. His character may strike a chord with many young people figuring out their sexual orientation, and it’s a pleasure to see gay people represented on screen in this way. While the movie is very much about gay people, Bobby and Aaron are two complex, flawed characters. They have qualities that everyone can relate to, and at its core, this is a story about a romantic relationship. Relationships are unique, messy, and painful at times, but they can be beautiful, necessary, and phenomenal in all the right ways. Bros is one of the best romantic comedies of the decade, offering plenty of laughs and maybe even a few tears by the end of it. SCORE: 9/10 As ComingSoon’s review policy explains, a score of 9 equates to “Excellent.” Entertainment that reaches this level is at the top of its type. The gold standard that every creator aims to reach. The technology giant announced that it is killing Google Stadia on January 18, 2023, rendering the platform completely useless. Vice President and General Manager Phil Harrison announced the shutdown on Google’s blog, noting that Stadia hadn’t performed up to the company’s expectations. And since the platform depends entirely on servers being up, users won’t be able to access their games after Stadia dies. However, Google is giving out refunds for all Stadia hardware (which includes consoles and controllers) purchased on the Google Store and all games and DLC purchased through the Stadia store. Harrison said they expected the refunds to be done by mid-January 2023 and more details are in its Help Center. MORE: Datamined MultiVersus Audio Points to Joker Announcer Pack From Mark Hamill The Help Center isn’t fully fleshed out yet, but does have more tidbits. Since most games don’t support cross-platform progression, it won’t be possible to transfer progress to other platforms. Pro subscriptions are not refundable, though, yet those subscribers will still have access to their Pro library titles. Refunds are not going to be through physical stores and users don’t have to send “most” hardware back in order to get money back. Those who paid with gift cards or defunct payment methods will be able to get a refund, but said users have to keep an eye on their inbox for a special email. Harrison praised the core technology by saying Google saw clear opportunities to apply it to both deals with outside companies and other parts of the company like YouTube, Google Play, and its various augmented efforts. Google will also invest in new tools and technologies and remains “deeply committed to gaming.” Many of those on the Stadia team have also been working for other parts of the company, too. MORE: Why Tunic’s New Reduced Difficulty Better Suits the Game This complete termination of service was seemingly inevitable. Google shut down all internal studios in February 2021. Harrison stated the company was shifting its resources to expand its efforts in helping developers and publishers “take advantage of [its] platform technology and deliver games directly to their players,” essentially shelving its development initiatives to help other teams instead (which it did by turning Stadia into a white-label product used by other companies). Many leads also left Stadia shortly after. Multiple outlets reported that Google didn’t fully support the idea and spent a ton of money locking up previously released games and trying to attract talent to develop titles, a strategy that didn’t draw in enough users. This also led to a lot of canceled projects or games that had to find new homes, as reported on by Video Games Chronicle and Axios. Games from Kojima Productions, Yu Suzuki, Typhoon Studio, former Ubisoft developer Francois Pelland, and Harmonix were among the parties with canceled games. The Quarry and High on Life were reportedly two games that had to find new publishers. Mescudi also co-created the TV event with Kenya Barris. RELATED: Interview: Entergalactic Co-Creator Kenya Barris Talks Collab With Scott Mescudi “An original, immersive, animated story about a young artist named Jabari — voiced by Mescudi — as he attempts to balance love and success,” says the synopsis. “Finding the latter brings Jabari a step closer to the former, when moving into his dream apartment introduces him to his new neighbor, photographer it-girl Meadow — voiced by Jessica Williams. An explosion of art, music, and fashion, Entergalactic takes place in the only city that can handle all three: New York.” Tyler Treese: Scott, I’ve been a huge fan of your music, and one thing you’ve always been able to do is to instill a mood to the listener through the production, your lyrics, and even just your humming. With Entergalactic, you get an extra layer to play with, with the visuals, which look just amazing. So how important was it to have just a great look to the series to really further the art? Scott Mescudi: Man, I think, you know, with me, I think my whole career has always been about how do I push it. How do I bring new experiences for the listener, for the fans? And with this, before I started, it was kind of like, I was in this place where I was really bored of recording an album and just releasing it and doing two music videos, and then that’d be it, you know? And I always wanted to do some type of visual album type thing, but that’s been done before and I was just trying to figure out my angle. So when this came around, it was kind of like “Oh, this is perfect.” You know, I can kind of do something where the music is as important as the visuals and it guides the story. And that’s something new, and the animation can be new and groundbreaking and different, you know? Everything is heightened, the music is heightened, the animation is heightened. And meeting up with [director Fletcher Moules], he was key, our director, finding exactly what I wanted with the animation. We went back and forth for months just trying to get it right. He was a really big help. You know, the first mockup that he did of the character was like, pretty much spot on. I felt like we put it in good hands with Fletch. So, it’s very important for me to just push it and make sure that kids are experiencing something they’ve never seen before. Jessica, there’s really great love story here. What element of Jabari and Meadow’s relationship did you just find the most moving? Jessica Williams: The element of Meadow and Jabari’s relationship that I found the most moving was when she hops on the back of his bike. That, I think about that a lot, it’s stuck with me and we’ve done this project over a couple of years. I like the symbolism of it, and I like how cute it is. It’s just as simple as that to me. It’s a really nice layered action between the two of them, and also I think it fits our movie really well. Yeah, I like it. Mescudi: Yeah. I agree. This is one of the most incredible casts I’ve ever seen in a TV event. Mescudi: I know. I’m so lucky. Similar to an album where you’re getting features. What was it like just getting all of your friends involved, all these great actors, and them wanting to be a part of your vision? Mescudi: Man, I remember when we first started, I was talking with [executive producer Karina Manashil] and the team, and I was just like, “Man, we got to figure out who can do this. You think they’ll do this?” Like, names would come up, and like, Jessica’s name comes up, and I was like, “All right, she’s in this Fantastic Beasts movie, this huge movie, would you want to do this?” You know, and it’s just like asking Timothée, even though Timothée’s my boy, I know Timothée’s got Dune and all this other stuff going on, these big movies, would he want to do my small animated show? It really just warmed my heart to see so many people just get behind it and get behind my idea, you know? And when we did that junket when we were all together a couple months ago, and then we had that question where we were like, “What made you guys all kind of get into the project?” and all you guys [said it was because of me]. Like, that moment right there was like, “Oh my God.” I just felt so good, you know? Because anybody, any artist, especially when you’re trying new things, and you’re going on a journey, and everybody involved knew that this was something different and new, it’s just… It just means so much that there’s so many people that are willing to take that ride with you, you know? That are willing to trust you on this whole ride. New datamined voice lines from the game have audio of Mark Hamill’s Joker acting as the announcer. As noted by MultiVersus dataminer LaisulMV, these lines have Joker saying “Ooh, we’re out of time,” “Only 30 seconds to mayhem,” and other quotes that talk more broadly about the match. None in the clip pointed to him being in the game as a playable fighter, but it’s possible he might join the roster down the line as LaisulMV also noted of some “ability” voice lines. However, those didn’t come with audio, meaning it’s a bit harder to pinpoint whether or not he’ll be playable. Joker was included in one of the game’s more substantial roster leaks, though. That leak included a few characters like Rick, Morty, LeBron James, and Gizmo, all of whom have joined the roster since, which gives the other parts of the leak more credibility.
