Review: A Moving Story About Growing Up | | by Spencer Legacy Sep 14, 2022 | | Goodbye, Don Glees! is the sort of movie that is enjoyable to anyone, but is especially appealing if you experienced your teenage years in the last decade or so. Taking plenty of inspiration from Stand by Me, it’s the type of movie that embodies a certain period of life for a decent swath of people, all portrayed with gorgeous anime visuals. If a modern anime take on Stand by Me sounds appealing to you, then you’ll likely be moved by this rather personal production. At its core, Goodbye, Don Glees! is about what it means to grow up. The characters have to face harsh realities involving everything from growing apart to mortality. These themes are handled well, with plenty of heavy emotional moments taking place throughout the film. There are lots of scenes of levity to keep the film from being completely dour, balancing the overall tone of the movie nicely. The story is a moving one, though it occasionally dips into melodrama in the middle section. It’s understandable, as the story follows three teenage boys who are all struggling with overwhelming emotions and the trials of entering adulthood. Just know that you’ll see more than a few sequences of the trio sobbing, though the story does warrant it most of the time. Though the film takes place in Japan, it tackles these themes in a universal way that makes it relatable to most people who were once teenage boys. From goofy hairstyles to obviously bad decisions, these lads tick every box for pubescent guys, making the film an accurate portrayal of those wacky years. The main characters are outcasts, so their friendship that comes from necessity feels very familiar. When they fight or open up to one another, the reactions are earned and personal.
The only issue I really have with Goodbye, Don Glees! is that its surreal, almost dream-like moments make it a bit hard to follow the story towards the end. I do like that random chance and coincidence play such a large part in the finale, as it speaks to yet another element of life that you learn about growing up: the role of luck in how your life turns out. Goodbye, Don Glees! is also a beautiful movie visually. Many of the sequences are stunningly vivid and detailed, with the environments especially looking truly natural and picturesque. It makes sense, as the studio behind the film is the talented Madhouse, whose excellence in making smooth and visually appealing anime continues to shine. The voice acting is excellent as well, with each member of the main trio feeling distinct. Their voices suit their personalities and the impassioned delivery suits the heavier moments perfectly. I watched the Japanese version with English subtitles, and though I recognized two of the three main actors from anime like JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure and Demon Slayer, they sounded so different that it took a while for me to place them. That should speak to how distinct these performances are, as they don’t blend in with any past performances. Goodbye, Don Glees! is a moving and personal exploration of growing up that will likely remind you of times gone by. It has equal amounts of silly gags and touching beats; a balance that fittingly represents adolescence in the modern world. It can be a bit difficult to differentiate what happens from what’s more symbolic towards the end, but the gorgeous visuals and personal story make it a worthwhile coming-of-age story. SCORE: 8/10 As ComingSoon’s review policy explains, a score of 8 equates to “Great.” While there are a few minor issues, this score means that the art succeeds at its goal and leaves a memorable impact. Lightyear is out now on 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD. “A sci-fi action adventure and the definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear, the hero who inspired the toy, Lightyear follows the legendary Space Ranger after he’s marooned on a hostile planet 4.2 million light-years from Earth alongside his commander and their crew,” says the synopsis. “As Buzz tries to find a way back home through space and time, he’s joined by a group of ambitious recruits and his charming robot companion cat, Sox. Complicating matters and threatening the mission is the arrival of Zurg, an imposing presence with an army of ruthless robots and a mysterious agenda.” Tyler Treese: Sox is such a fun character. I really like how you capture the robotic feel of him, but you also give him a personality. How did you find that balance for your performance? Peter Sohn: I think it’s because of my nerdy love for 90s sci-fi. From all of the C3PO and Data from Star Trek, there was a balance of trying to understand. They come from a military unit, and so what I loved about the Star Trek world was that, Data was always like, “Yes, captain,” you know? And so there was a little bit of that ingredient in there that when Buzz was talking about the mission that Sox would play more on the “It’s approximately…” and so there would be this more positive, Android-style voice, but then when it got more intense and I started playing in the more the friendly Sox, and two keys for me was the military version would be like “Yes, Captain.” So this is, you know, the numbers that you need. And then for the friend, it would be “Hey Buzz!” And so “Hey, Buzz!” was my key to get into the friendly side of Sox, when it was appropriate with [director Angus MacLane]. It’s so fun watching the bond between Sox and Buzz develop because at first Buzz is very, you know, rare. He doesn’t really think he needs any therapy or any help. So what did you like most about that arc? Because it’s enjoyable to watch, but it’s also a pretty important message. Yeah. I think one of the emotional things that I really got from the film was that Sox was a gift from his friend Izzy and that it somehow allowed that relationship to keep going on through the movie as Buzz recognized what this gift was, in terms of them getting closer, and that Buzz was like, “Okay, you know, just figure out this problem and I don’t have to deal with you.” And then switching to, “I don’t want to lose you, I’m going to come back and grab my cat,” you know, that was so satisfying how they worked that out. And as small as that arc is, it just ties to the simplicity of making friends, even if it’s a robot, that they began a bond. I was curious, you’re not a voice actor by trade, but you’ve voiced so many great characters and you do a great job. Has your approach changed any over the years as you’ve just gotten more experienced? It was really just trying to find keys into the voice that can sort of…the characters I’m playing are smaller. And so they have a very specific sort of job they need to do. And, trying to find a key to get into that voice is always the game for me, and I didn’t start off with that, it was something that I had learned throughout the process here. , And what it means by finding a key is a phrase of something that connects to that specific tool or usage of that character, which is why I was saying for Sox, it was “Yes, Captain,” and “Hi, Buzz!” Those were the two keys for me for Sox. You’ve got Elemental coming up, which you’re directing, but you have to always be busy being part of the Pixar senior creative team with everything always moving and so many different projects going on at once. Do you like that? Because I’m sure it never gets repetitive. It’s great. Directing something here, you get a really great seat at seeing really talented people do their work. From meeting to meeting, you’re really blown away by someone’s art that they created, or a skill that they know in terms of how to make something come alive, or even bringing a voice to a character. Like it’s just constantly being in awe of a lot of the talented folks around you. Yes, and so you’re right, it’s always a different game, but it’s not easy either. And the biggest sort of game that you have to play is to stay objective. Because these movies take so long that you’re always, like, “I’ve seen this joke 7 million times, how do I stay fresh looking at it?” You helped direct the English dub for Ponyo. What did it mean for you to work on a Ghibli movie? Peter Sohn: That’s a big one for me. Obviously, Miyazaki films mean a lot, growing up with them and then trying to study them in school, having to get to work with Miyazaki and that whole team and seeing how they work and try to bring something special, and honor the work that they’re doing is probably one of the greatest, lucky things I’ve gotten to do. You know, maybe it’ll be on my tombstone when I die, “Got to work on Ponyo,” you know? This biographical drama follows June and Jennifer Gibbons, two twin sisters who only speak with each other and not to the rest of the world. It opens with the characters speaking vibrantly to each other but quickly changes to show that their interactions are internal. Unfortunately, the rest of the movie never rises above this creativity. The Silent Twins is a well-directed but uninteresting story that does not deliver on the promise of the premise. There are many aspects to appreciate about a film like The Silent Twins. A movie without merit does not simply have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. There are positive aspects to the film, such as Agnieszka Smoczyńska’s direction. She elevates the screenplay beyond what it is on the page, using a solid vision and style to tell this real-life story. Her use of cool lighting in the film perfectly complements the narrative’s dark, tragic nature. It is easy to notice whenever the lighting becomes warm and Smoczyńska uses that contrast excellently. She and cinematographer Jakub Kijowski create a well-shot film with a lot of visual storytelling. Furthermore, the idea of a story where the main characters do not speak to anyone but themselves is promising. There is a lot that a filmmaker can do with silence, but the screenplay never delivers. The fact that the Gibbons twins are both writers who don’t express themselves through words but works of fiction has a lot of possible staying power. Unfortunately, the film does not get a lot of mileage out of its stop-motion storytelling sequences, never utilizing the emotion and drama that can come from this premise.
The Silent Twins never fully dives into the drama that can arise between parents who cannot communicate with their children. There are a few tragic, well-acted scenes, but the movie doesn’t lean into these sentiments enough to make a compelling narrative. Once the characters and conflicts are established, the film runs out of things to say. As a result, there isn’t enough meat on the bones of this story to justify a feature film. Instead, this movie tells a story you would rather learn about in a five-minute documentary video on YouTube, instead of a feature that runs for nearly two hours. While the Gibbons twins are fascinating by nature, the movie surrounding them is pretty unremarkable. There is a strange romance storyline that hardly leads to any conflict. The filmmakers wanted you to feel pity for how society treats the twins, but there isn’t enough nuance in the screenplay to make the audience care for them. It’s challenging to build an emotional attachment to two characters who barely speak, and The Silent Twins never lands the pathos it pursues. The strongest elements of this film are Letitia Wright and Tamara Lawrance’s phenomenal, subdued performances as the twins. At best, The Silent Twins can be a well-crafted tragedy with inventive camera movements and direction. At worst, it is a lethargic film, grasping at straws to tell a story that does not feel emotionally powerful. Even the ending, which features an intriguing event, feels thematically empty. The surface-level telling of this real-life story never warrants a movie that ends up worth watching. As a result, there is nothing about this film worth recommending, even if it has a gripping story behind it. SCORE: 4/10 As ComingSoon’s review policy explains, a score of 4 equates to “Poor.” The negatives overweigh the positive aspects making it a struggle to get through. Disclosure: The critic attended a press screening for ComingSoon’s The Silent Twins review.
