| | | US prosecutors may negotiate plea deal with 9/11 architect Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, other conspirators: Report | | Sep 11, 2022 | | U.S. military prosecutors are reportedly negotiating potential plea deals with 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four other conspirators imprisoned in Guantanamo Bay. The plea deals may allow the five dependents to escape a potential death penalty, according to CBS. Mohammed is widely credited with being the architect of the 9/11 terror attacks. The other four defendants are Ramzi Binalshibh, Mustafa Ahmed al-Hawsawi, Walid bin Attash and Ammar al-Baluchi. Attorneys for the defendants reportedly say they would be willing to enter a guilty plea in exchange for taking the death penalty off the table, as well as for getting treatment for alleged torture they experienced while in CIA custody. The CIA held each of the five men for interrogation prior to their arrival in Guantanamo in 2006. Critics argue the CIA's methods amounted to illegal torture. POLITICAL PRISON: WHAT'S GOING ON IN GUANTANAMO BAY? HUNDREDS OF RELEASED GITMO DETAINEES BACK TO KILLING AMERICANS James Connell, a defense attorney for al-Baluchi, did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital. Mohammed and his co-defendants are charged with crimes including terrorism, hijacking and 2,976 counts of murder for their alleged roles planning and providing logistical support to the Sept. 11 plot. The trial for the five men has been bogged down in legal challenges for years. Prosecutors attempted to advance via pre-trial hearings in late 2021, but there remains no end in sight. Each of the defendants has been assigned a military lawyer, a civilian lawyer and a human rights lawyer. The case has come before seven different judges, with the latest being Air Force Lt. Col. Matthew McCall. Air National Guard Fighter Pilot Heather Penney joined "Fox & Friends Weekend" on Sunday, September 11, 2022, to discuss the mission she was given 21 years ago on 9/11. Vice President Dick Cheney reportedly ordered fighter pilots to ram United Airlines Flight 93 after two hijacked commercial planes – UA Flight 11 and UA Flight 175 – were flown into the World Trade Center by members of al-Qaeda. "As a brand new rookie pilot… we didn’t have any ordinance on our aircraft, just training ordinance. But we knew we had to get airborne," Penney recalled when she spoke with "Fox & Friends Weekend." "We knew we had to protect our nation’s capital," she continued. "But our biggest challenges were getting the authorization to launch and getting real live weapons on the aircraft." ON 9/11 ANNIVERSARY, FAITH LEADERS NATIONWIDE OFFER PRAYERS, COMFORT AND HOPE FOR OUR COUNTRY The planes Penney and her team prepped and flew for this mission were F-16 Falcons, which are significantly smaller than commercial planes United Airlines uses to transport civilian passengers, as "Fox & Friends Weekend host Pete Hegseth pointed out. Penney fulfilled her orders all while wondering if her father, who was a pilot for United Airlines, could be one of the hijacked planes. She told "Fox & Friends Weekend" that she hadn’t been trained for a situation like 9/11. "In the military, we don’t train for suicide missions because we value our war fighters," Penney said, calling them "a part of our unique capabilities" and noting, "we were in a position where unless we had those missiles, there was no other choice." LEE GREENWOOD ON THE BIBLE, FAITH AND 9/11: 'WE PRAY FOR GOD'S HAND' OVER US ALL Penney said Lt. General Marc Sasseville, deputy chief of the National Guard, was her flight lead on 9/11. At that time, he was the D.C. Air National Guard’s director of operations, Penney said. Penney and Sasseville reportedly took off from Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, D.C. "We knew we were based there right next to the nation’s capital, but we had to have the authorization from our civilian leadership to allow us to take off, especially given the magnitude of what we knew the target was," Penney recalled. 9/11 PROMISE RUN: ANNUAL RACE FROM PENTAGON TO GROUND ZERO PROVIDES ‘GOD MOMENTS,’ FOUNDER SAYS The hijackers on Flight 93 were on path to Washington, D.C., but the plane crashed in a wooded area of Somerset County, Pennsylvania, after passengers tried to regain control over the aircraft. Penney told "Fox & Friends Weekend" that she would’ve rammed her aircraft into Flight 93 if the timing had worked out. "There was no question in [Sasseville’s] mind and in my mind what we needed to do," Penney said. "We were willing to do that because not only had we sworn an oath to protect and defend our constitution, the U.S. and our way of life, protect our people, but anyone who had seen what had happened that day would’ve been willing to do the same thing." Penney went on to say that numerous people stepped up and made "similar" heroic choices on the morning of 9/11. "What truly is amazing to me is that there’s nothing special about what [Sasseville] and I were willing to do, and frankly what the passengers on flight 93 did do," Penney said. She continued, "This kind of heroism, this bravery, this service is inside each and every one of us. I just wish it didn’t take a national crisis to bring that heroism out." | | | | | UFC 279: Nate Diaz submits Tony Ferguson in potential final bout with company | | Sep 11, 2022 | | Nate Diaz closed a wild week in possibly his final UFC bout with a victory over Tony Ferguson on Saturday night in Las Vegas. Diaz finished Ferguson at UFC 279 with a guillotine choke in the fourth round. Ferguson was thrust into the bout after Khamzat Chimaev missed weight for his fight against Diaz. He was forced to fight Kevin Holland instead, and eventually defeated Holland with a chokehold of his own. The 37-year-old’s time with UFC may be over as his contract ran out without the two sides coming to an agreement on an extension. Diaz appeared on and won "The Ultimate Fighter 5" in 2007 and quickly moved up the rankings. He had memorable fights against Donald Cerrone and Conor McGregor among others. I feel like I’ve had the longest career in the UFC, and I’ve had the most successful one out of everybody," Diaz said. He already announced plans to start his own promotion outside UFC. But McGregor also opened the door for a trilogy bout. McGregor has been on the mend after suffering a broken leg during his last bout against Dustin Poirier. "I want to get out of the UFC for a minute and show these UFC fighters how to take over and own up another sport how you’re supposed to do it," Diaz said. JAKE PAUL TO FIGHT FORMER UFC MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPION ANDERSON SILVA: REPORT "Because Conor McGregor didn’t know how to do it, and none of these other fighters know how to do it, so I’m going to go out there and I’m going to take over another organization, another profession, and become the best at that, and then I’m going to be right back here to get another UFC title. It’s the best battle in the world." UFC president Dana White said he would support Diaz with whatever he chose to do next. "No matter what Nate does from here on out, this is his house," White said, via MMA Junkie. "He’s been here forever. It’s been a blast having him here. I wish him well. "He and I had this discussion months ago at the offices. Whatever he moves on to do, I wish him nothing but the best. If he’s starting his own organization or getting into promoting or doing something else, I wish him nothing but the best of luck. It’s been awesome having him here." Greg Abbott targets Philadelphia as the next destination for migrants being bussed to Democrat-led cities. "The city is inventorying existing resources should those seeking safe refuge find their way to Philadelphia," Kevin Lessard, a spokesperson for Democratics Mayor Jim Kenney, told Axios. There has been no confirmation that busses of migrants from Texas will be directed to Philadelphia. Kenney’s office says it does not anticipate any notice if busses are directed to the City of Brotherly Love, Axios reported. Kenney's office did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment on Sunday. Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has sent busses carrying more than 7,600 migrants to Washington, D.C., since April. The governor began sending busses of migrants to New York City early last month and busses to Chicago at the end of August. Roughly 1,900 migrants have so far been bussed to New York City, Fox News Digital previously reported. An Abbott spokesperson did tell Axios to "stay tuned" when asked what other cities will see busses of migrants. Conservative leaders in border states and across the country have slammed President Biden for his immigration policies amid the crisis at the border, including ending the Trump administration’s "Remain in Mexico" policy, announcing an ultimately-failed plan to offer citizenship to 11 million illegal immigrants at the start of his presidential tenure, and loosening border enforcement policies. TENNESSEE MCDONALD’S EMPLOYEE CALLS POLICE AFTER MIGRANTS BEGIN PANHANDLING DURING STOP ON WAY TO EAST COAST "President Biden has never visited the border to understand the magnitude of the crisis he created. His ‘Border Czar’ Vice President Kamala Harris has similarly taken no meaningful actions to address the gravity of the situation, except one visit to the El Paso sector over a year ago. U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas recently testified that the southern border is 'safe and secure.' As thousands of illegal immigrants cross the border each day, that statement is either shockingly uninformed or intentionally deceptive," Abbott wrote in an op-ed published on Fox News Digital last month. Abbott and his office have issued repeated statements that Democratic leaders denouncing the strategy of bussing migrants should speak with Biden about securing the border. LORI LIGHTFOOT DOUBTS GOV. ABBOTT’S FAITH AS MIGRANT BUSES ARRIVE IN CHICAGO: 'HE PROFESSES TO BE A CHRISTIAN' "If [D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser] wants a solution to this crisis, she should call on President Biden to take immediate action to secure the border – something he has failed to do. The true ongoing humanitarian crisis is along our southern border," the governor’s office said in July following criticisms from the D.C. mayor. Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot has joined Bowser and New York City Mayor Eric Adams in condemning Abbott for the strategy, with Lightfoot doubting Abbott’s Christian faith as busses arrived in Chicago last weekend. "He professes to be a Christian," Lightfoot said at a press conference last Sunday. "This is not the Christianity and the teachings of the Bible that I know. And I think religious leaders all across the country are standing up and denouncing exactly this." Abbott's office told Fox News Digital last week that "attacking the governor’s commitment to his faith is a pathetic political ploy to change the conversation away from Mayor Lightfoot’s unwillingness to uphold her city’s self-declared sanctuary status." | | | | | UFC 279: Irene Aldana knocks out Macy Chiasson with brutal kick to liver | | Sep 11, 2022 | | Irene Aldana pulled off an impressive knockout move in her victory against Macy Chiasson at UFC 279 on Saturday night. In the third round of the bout, Aldana entered historic territory when her up kick landed on Chiasson’s liver. Chiasson went down to the mat in some serious pain. The fight, a catchweight bout at 140 pounds, was stopped with 2:42 remaining in the third round. According to MMA Junkie, it was just the third up-kick knockout in UFC history. JAKE PAUL TO FIGHT FORMER UFC MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPION ANDERSON SILVA: REPORT Aldana moved to 14-6 in her MMA career. The Mexico native’s victory over Chiasson is her fourth in her last five fights. She beat Yana Kunitskaya UFC 264 in July 2021 via technical knockout as well. She also defeated Ketlen Vieira and Vanessa Melo in bouts since September 2019. Her lone loss since then came against Holly Holm via decision in October 2020. Chiasson picked up her second loss in her last three fights. She defeated Norma Dumont at UFC 274 in May but lost via submission against Raquel Pennington at UFC Fight Night 199 in December 2021. Before that, she had wins against Marion Reneau and Shanna Young – both via unanimous decision. | | | | | Former Democratic senator slams Chief Justice Roberts, says he's 'out of touch' after Dobbs decision | | Sep 11, 2022 | | Former Democratic senator and NBC News analyst Claire McCaskill slammed Chief Justice John Roberts on Sunday and said he was "so out of touch" following the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision. "He’s so so out of touch. I mean really, this interview shows why the numbers for the Supreme Court are so bad. For him to say something like that, he just doesn’t get it. You don’t take away a right that’s been around for 50 years and you don't have a party go to extremes of trying to make sure rape victims have to have forced birth. You don’t do that and not have it splash back on the Supreme Court. They all said they respected precedent when they were confirmed. I heard them, America heard them. Clearly they didn't and you can feel me getting angry at John Roberts right now because he knows better when he says that stuff," McCaskill said. Justice Roberts defended the legitimacy of the Supreme Court on Friday during the 10th Circuit Bench and Bar Conference in Colorado Spring, Colorado. Republican strategist Matt Gorman said Roberts has always wanted to depoliticize the court. KAMALA HARRIS BLASTS ‘ACTIVIST’ SUPREME COURT AFTER DOBBS DECISION "Is the court more politicized or are we? If we had upheld Roe, if the court had upheld Roe, you wouldn’t be hearing that. I think activism really is lying in the eye of the beholder right now. We’re in a situation where if you don’t like it, it’s really not about the decision, it’s about the legitimacy," he said. NBC's "Meet the Press" host Chuck Todd asked the panelists if "court" was a better issue than abortion. Yamiche Alcindor said that voters were talking about court and abortion and added Republican women were particularly concerned. Roberts didn't expressly mention the court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, but called out those who have questioned the court's legitimacy following the decision. MSNBC’S LAWRENCE O’DONNELL ADVOCATES EXPANDING SUPREME COURT TO ‘DILUTE THE TRUMP POISON’ "If the court doesn’t retain its legitimate function of interpreting the constitution, I’m not sure who would take up that mantle," Roberts said on Friday. "You don’t want the political branches telling you what the law is, and you don’t want public opinion to be the guide about what the appropriate decision is." McCaskill also praised Vice President Kamala Harris, who joined Todd for an interview, and said that she has had a "rough road to go" since she was elected. "It’s a hard, hard job, the vice presidency," she said. "It’s even harder, I think, if you are a woman in that job who is seen as an opponent by a lot of the insiders in Washington for the presidency. And so there’s a lot of chattering behind the scenes of trying to diss Kamala Harris. I think this interview shows that maybe all the dissing of Kamala Harris is way premature. I think she did a good job and stood strong." | | | | | Church destroyed in 9/11 celebrates reopening 21 years later: 'Symbol of peace and love' | | Sep 11, 2022 | | A church that was destroyed in the September 11 terror attacks celebrates its official reopening this year 21 years after it was decimated. "The Friends of St. Nicholas" chairman Michael Psaros joined "Fox & Friends Weekend" to discuss the reopening and consecration of the church. ON 9/11 ANNIVERSARY, FAITH LEADERS NATIONWIDE OFFER PRAYERS, COMFORT AND HOPE FOR OUR COUNTRY MICHAEL PSAROS: We consecrated the church on July the Fourth for a very important reason because the Saint Nicholas National Shrine celebrates the American values of religious freedom and stands as a defined symbol to the forces of religious intolerance around the world, and on that horrific day 21 years ago, when all of Ground Zero was destroyed, a small Greek Orthodox Church was destroyed along with it, and that destruction was caused by an act of religious fanaticism and hatred. In response, we have built not just the church but New York's only national shrine, and it was built as a symbol of peace and love in response to the act of violence and hatred. We are so proud. We are going to open on November the first and the National Shrine is open to people of all faiths, of all nationalities. And I invite America in the world on our behalf to please come visit after November 1st. | | | | | Prince William ripped on social media, Prince Harry praised for treatment of Meghan Markle in viral video | | Sep 11, 2022 | | It was the reunion to end all reunions — the new Prince and Princess of Wales mourning the loss of Queen Elizabeth II alongside the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. With the highly anticipated gathering of Prince William and Prince Harry and their wives came an influx of analysis of how the royals interacted with one another, as their tumultuous relationship still remains center-stage. However, in viral video shared across multiple platforms, social media users erupted with criticism for the Prince of Wales, the next royal to inherit the crown, for his apparent lack of chivalry with wife Kate Middleton, whilst praising the Duke of Sussex for his treatment of wife Meghan Markle. As the two couples prepare to depart the massive crowd outside of Windsor Castle gathering to pay their respects to the queen, Prince Harry can be seen ushering his wife to their shared car, attentively opening and closing the door for her, while the Prince and Princess of Wales separately enter the car. MEGHAN MARKLE CANCELS US EVENTS COINCIDING WITH QUEEN'S FUNERAL AMID SPECULATION OVER HER ATTENDANCE: REPORT Fans eviscerated the elder monarch, with one Twitter user simply writing, "Harry holds the car door open for his wife. Makes sure she's safe. Wills does not. Case closed." Several users reflected on the incident, drawing comparisons between William and his father, King Charles III, with Harry and his mother, the late Diana. One user wrote, "Harry is a gentleman. William however acts like his father." Another person added, "Harry is a true king and son of Diana. (sic) Look how he cares (sic) for his wife." Another Twitter user went so far as to say, "One thing is for sure: he is not going to treat his wife like his father did her mother. That's what the British public don't get. He opened the door for his wife on his own accord, and his wife responded by saying thank you. That's mutual respect." CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR THE ENTERTAINMENT NEWSLETTER One TikTok user offered, "He didn’t want what happened to his mother to happen to Meghan. He is a good husband." While the majority of users were critical of William, some users disagreed, with one writing, "Class act from William inviting his brother and SIL despite all the hurt caused and the lies." Prior to the Queen's death, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had been in the country for several events, one of which featured Markle as a keynote speaker. | | | | | VP Harris blames GOP 'election deniers' for making US democracy 'weaker' through 'threats from within' | | Sep 11, 2022 | | Vice President Kamala Harris, in a new interview, ripped Republican "election deniers" ahead of November’s midterm elections for harming the United States’ reputation for upholding "democratic principles" and the "rule of law" on the world stage on the 21st anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. During an interview pre-filmed in Houston, Texas, and aired Sunday on NBC’s "Meet the Press," host Chuck Todd asked the vice president if the threats the U.S. faced after 9/11 are equal or greater than the so-called threats the country now faces "from within." Harris, who formerly served on the Senate intelligence committee, said the nature of a foreign versus domestic threat is "very different," though "each are dangerous." On the committee, she said she worked with fellow Democrats, Republicans and Independents, who were "Americans first, focused on the threats to our national security, on common ground with a common purpose, which is to defend our nation against attacks." ‘JIHAD AGAINST AMERICANS’ SUSPECT IN STRING OF SEATTLE-AREA, NEW JERSEY MURDERS SENTENCED TO ANOTHER 93 YEARS "When I think about what we’ve been seeing as far as the attacks from within, I wish that we would approach it the same way instead through some partisan lense," Harris said. "I think that it is a threat, and I think that it is very dangerous, and it makes us weaker." Harris said has met with more than 100 foreign heads of state, and in those rooms, the United States represents the importance of democratic principles, rule of law and human rights. "The rest of the world — like to any role model — watces what we do to see if it matches up with what we say," Harris said. "So, we look at the fact that there are 11 people right now running for Secretary of State — the keepers of the integrity of the voting system in their state — who are election deniers." "You couple that with people who hold some of the highest elected offices in our country who refuse to condemn an insurrection on Jan. 6," she added. "And I think what it sends is a signal that causes people to question, ‘Hey is America still valuing what they talk about?’ which is the integrity of democracies which means protecting rule of law and the sanctity of these systems. And speaking up when they are attacked." "What is asemi-fascist?" Todd asked later in the interview, referring to Biden's latest anti-GOP moniker. "Listen … let’s not get caught up in politicizing the fact that most people in American know that it is not helpful to our country when we have people who are denying elections or trying to obstruct the outcome of an election where the largest number of people in our country voted for the President of the United States," Harris said. "When we look at where we are, we have to admit that there are attacks from within – to your first question – and we need to take it seriously, and we need to stand up together, all of us, and think of it no through a partisan lens, but as Americans." Todd quoted Biden’s inaugural address, repeating, "Politics need not be a raging fire destroying everything in its path," before recognizing the president’s recent remarks on "semi-fascism." "Joe Biden has spent his entire career — it is on for all to see — working across the aisle … sometimes he’s been criticized for believing in bipartisanship, for believing in compromise," Harris said. "But there are moments in time when we have to also agree, all good people who care about our country, that there are those who right now are vividly not defending our democracy. And I think we want our commander-in-chief, that the President of the United States will speak up and sound the alarm to what this means to our strength and our future, much less our integrity." Refusing to comment on how individual Democratic candidates are running their campaigns in some races across the country, Harris stressed that in less than two months, during the November midterms, the "issue of choice" is on the ballot after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. | | | | | |
