| | | 3 Superman Stories DC Could Adapt Following Henry Cavill's DCU Return | | por Colin Tessier Oct 27, 2022 | | More so than it has in quite some time, the film side of the DC Universe is gaining positive momentum. Fresh off the news that James Gunn and Peter Safran have been named the co-CEOs of the new DC Studios, fans are buzzing about the future. This positive step comes after the electrifying news that Henry Cavill is indeed back as Superman. Combined, these moves signify a substantial shift in the DCU, and no one can exactly predict how it will all play out at this stage. However, with Cavill’s return, “The Last Son of Krypton” is seemingly set to regain his rightful place at the forefront of DC’s film slate. It’s hard to believe, but while Cavill has played the hero for nearly a decade, he hasn’t been substantially involved with a new project featuring the character since Justice League came out in 2017. (Zack Snyder’s Justice League doesn’t really count.) With that in mind, there’s so much untapped potential for Superman in the DCU. RELATED: The Rock Explains Why Black Adam vs. Superman Isn’t the Next Step Even when one factors in the quartet of movies where Christopher Reeves delivered his iconic portrayal and Brandon Routh’s memorable turn in Superman Returns, these films barely scratched the surface. A number of classic comic stories could serve as excellent source material for Cavill’s Superman project(s), and taking a look at just three of them offers a glimpse of this rich well of possibilities. All-Star Superman Perhaps the best bet would be to go back to the basics. The Superman fans have seen since Man of Steel has been criticized for being too dark and violent. Borrowing from one of the most beloved Superman stories of all time could help get the character back on track and remind fans why he’s such a legendary hero. Grant Morrison’s All-Star Superman is centered around his dying days; after he’s overexposed to solar radiation, he is left with a year to live. From there, the story plays all the hits, from Superman revealing his secret identity to Lois Lane to teaming up with her to fight a huge monster. The story also features plenty of heart, as Kal-El speaks with his father and has a climactic showdown with his nemesis, Lex Luthor, which includes the villain weeping after he sees Superman’s vision for Earth. There’s no happy ending here; Superman dies, so an adaptation would likely have to make plenty of changes in order to leave room for future films. However, borrowing from All-Star Superman could be a fitting way to showcase the main elements of the hero and his supporting cast while also re-establishing the bright tone he’s known for. Superman: Brainiac A new Superman movie is an appropriate time to start fresh, so it might be better if it avoids going back to the same well of villains fans have seen before. General Zod and Lex Luther have been featured before, but “The Man of Steel” has plenty of captivating antagonists to choose from. In the modern world, Brainiac could be the most compelling option. A cross between a brilliant alien and a cold, unfeeling machine, Brainiac has changed a lot over the years, so there are multiple versions of the character to choose from. In a nutshell, he’s typically a highly advanced supercomputer who, at times, has ambitions of universal conquest. He also seeks universal knowledge despite his characterization as a super-genius that easily outranks even the smartest humans on the planet. As one of Superman’s classic villains, he has battled the hero many times, but Superman: Brainiac certainly packs a punch. Kal-El learns that Brainiac shrank a Kryptonian city and was at fault for the deaths of numerous Kryptonians. Of course, Brainiac targets Earth, and it’s up to Superman and Supergirl to stop him. Despite being a standard hero vs. alien story, this one carries plenty of weight, and it could also be a logical way to bring Supergirl into the DCU. Superman: President Luthor As mentioned, Luthor has been featured in multiple movies, as Gene Hackman, Kevin Spacey, and Jesse Eisenberg have played him over the years, not to mention Michael Rosenbaum’s televised portrayal on Smallville. But there’s a reason the villain has so much staying power; he’s the perfect foil to Superman. The motives behind his hatred of the hero have varied over the years, but more often than not, it boils down to a battle of good and evil. This struggle can be magnified if the next Superman movie borrows from the “President Luthor” storyline. As the name suggests, Luthor becomes the president of the United States and uses his power to make Superman’s life a living hell. He also learns of Kal-El’s human identity and uses it against him while also attempting to leverage an alien invasion into an attempt to make himself look like an almighty leader. There are plenty of options with this story alone; the DCU could keep it somewhat grounded and focus on President Luthor’s misdeeds at the national level, or it could go as far as the aforementioned fight with aliens. Either way, leaning on “President Luthor” would be a dynamic path forward that could cement Luthor as a heinous villain and shine a light on Superman’s patriotism. These are just a few examples, and there are countless other Superman stories that could serve as great foundations for the hero’s return to the DCU. Whether it’s playing the hits, spotlighting a new villain, or revisiting Superman’s nemesis, the possibilities are endless, and there’s good reason to think that any number of them could help turn “The Man of Steel” back into a beloved character. In the story, Luthen Rael visited Gerrera in Segra Milo to propose to him a collaboration with a mysterious separatist known as Anto Kreegyr. The character portrayed by Forest Whitaker didn’t seem to be very thrilled about the idea of his Partisans collaborating with other people. The Rebel Alliance was still in its early phase and the several groups antagonizing the Empire scattered throughout the galaxy. Ultimately, the soon-to-be Jyn Erso’s mentor refused Rael’s offer and invited him to leave. Of course, Gerrera’s destiny is already known. As seen in Rogue One, the rebel extremist meets his destiny following the Death Star’s attack on Jedha City. However, the character’s backstory is still being expanded through different media. They didn’t stop even when their plans involved civilian targets. Their methods didn’t sit well with people like Mon Mothma and Bail Organa, who separated their ways from the Partisans. So it’s been brewing for a long time. It just took me longer to get here.” That being said, it wasn’t until August that Jackman fully committed to coming back as Wolverine, which is when he informed Ryan Reynolds of the decision. “Oh my God, I’m thrilled,” Reynolds said of Jackman’s return. “It’s like old home week. They discussed the inspiring and disturbing elements of the true crime drama. The film is now streaming on Netflix. “Nurse Amy Loughren is shocked when Charlie Cullen, one of her colleagues, is found responsible for the murder of dozens of patients over a period of sixteen years, across two states and nine hospitals, without being charged,” reads the film’s synopsis. Tyler Treese: Jessica, Amy is providing for her family. She’s having to work with a heart condition, and then on top of that, she has her many duties as a nurse. Yet through all this, we see such resiliency and it all comes from this love for her family. What about Amy’s triumph really connected with you? Jessica Chastain: I think you kind of hit it on the head when you talk about the love for her family. One of the first conversations that I had with her, I asked her why she worked as a night nurse, and she said it was so her daughters would think that they had a stay-at-home mom, because she was a single mom. And so there was a big responsibility in taking care of them, keeping them housed and fed and taken care of, and loved. So she would work all night long while they were asleep, and when they were awake, she was awake with them at home. And so they really got to spend a lot of their lives with her, but it showed that she didn’t have much time to really care for herself. And I found that to be really interesting with someone who’s playing someone who needs a heart transplant, and she’s pushing herself to the very limit of her health and taking care of others, and yet no one’s really taking care of her. And that’s where Charlie comes in and that becomes her blind spot. There’s a real connection between them and it makes what happens all the more disarming and disturbing. Eddie, when you’re playing such a character, it’s disturbing how well somebody that demented can just fit in and be somebody’s friend. Can you speak to your nuanced approach there because you make him likable? Eddie Redmayne: Well, as Jess was saying, our massive insight in the making of this film was the real Amy Loughren. And when we spoke before we made the film, she was really strong with talking about how these were two different human beings. That there was her friend Charlie, who saved her life, who was kind, who was a fastidious and quite brilliant nurse. And then there was this serial killer who she met twice, once in the scene in which she was mic’d up and once in the interrogation room. And so that became really important that we really lent into the quality of that friendship and the truth of that friendship. Because Amy’s relationship with Charlie to this day remains incredibly complicated. Jessica, what I kind of took away from the film was just the importance of compassion in our actions. What really stood out to you about this story? Chastain: That stood out to me, and also a lot of times in our media and with true crime stories, you see violence being met with violence, and that’s what breaks the cycle. And in other cultures, that’s not the case. Actually, in our culture, it’s not always the case. I mean, Amy was able to break the cycle of violence by looking at this person and reminding him that he’s a human and of his humanity when everyone else is treating him like a monster, reminding him of their friendship and how much the good in him, you know, he saved her life, and she reminds him of his goodness. I believe that you become the energy that someone gives you. That’s how you react and it stopped this violence and this cycle, and I love to be a part of this genre with that kind of message. Wonderfully put. And then Eddie, my last question, you actually did some real training, to learn like nurse skills, how to insert IVs and such. How did that go? Were you a natural? Redmayne: Natural’s probably not the word, no. I would say I was a useless nurse. Chastain: No! Redmayne: I was! I was. You’re generous, Jess. But I learned a lot. But, it took me back to being at school again, kind of leaning back in your chair, having a short attention span. But it also made me respect what nurses do extraordinarily. The fact that they have to be polymaths, they have to be brilliant at science, at maths, they have to be physically very strong. The pure physicality of moving bodies and moving beds around, mixed with then also having this emotional intelligence, to be able to break news or comfort people at their most vulnerable. That was…I had never really thought that through and that astonished me. I’ve been a One Piece fan since they first published Shonen Jump in North America, so this continued investment meant my expectations for Film: Red were through the roof. Even with that in mind, I was blown away by the movie and entirely pleased with this latest Straw Hat journey. Though not canon, the film is set around the Wano arc and follows the Straw Hat crew as they attend the first live concert performed by Uta — a famous singer who is Luffy’s childhood friend and Red-Haired Shanks’ daughter. While this review is largely spoiler-free, the movie itself does spoil certain elements of the anime, with one spoiler for a part of the story that hasn’t been animated yet (as of the writing of this review). That said, casual fans can still have a great time with Film: Red, as it’s a brilliant movie that doesn’t require much knowledge of One Piece to be a blast. The first half of the film features quite a few songs, but it doesn’t feel disruptive. The music in One Piece Film: Red is incredible, largely thanks to the vocal talents of Ado — the Japanese idol singer who provides Uta’s singing voice. The different songs she performs throughout the film are incredible and often poignant, perfectly establishing a variety of tones as the narrative progresses. They also represent Uta’s own progression beautifully, truly hammering home her emotional character arc. Film: Red excels at character moments, providing excellent interactions between the main cast and the returning characters. I was impressed at how unusual some of the character choices were, with less prominent characters like Blueno and Bartolomeo playing key roles in the plot. This is similar to how the previous film, Stampede, highlighted characters and character combinations that the main series simply couldn’t, and just like in that situation, it turns out to be one of the highlights of the film.
I do wish just a bit more emphasis was put on Shanks given how important he is to the core story of the film. It takes a good while for the legendary pirate to show up, though once Shanks arrives, he certainly makes an impression fitting of his colossal reputation. We get to see Shanks and his crew so rarely that I can’t help but wish we got a bit more time with them here, but given the incredible and exciting nature of what we do get, I can’t complain too much. Naturally, the action in Film: Red is dynamic and thrilling. This is especially true towards the end of the film, where two crews are working simultaneously to defeat the final antagonist. There are plenty of sequences of different characters using their unique abilities, from Law’s classic Room skill to Shanks’ ridiculous Conqueror’s Haki. There’s even an early animated peek at a power that hasn’t been seen in the anime yet, which induced a great deal of hype in the context that it was used. I also appreciated how much One Piece humor is present. Somehow, this series is able to find endless comedy in Luffy’s simple mind and thought process — possibly due to how earnest and endearing he is. While Luffy certainly has many serious moments throughout the film, there’s lots of comedy to balance the tone out. It doesn’t take away from the heavier moments, which hit hard, but they keep that wonderful One Piece tone intact. One Piece is all about fun and adventure in even the darkest circumstances, which Film: Red seems to completely understand. One Piece Film: Red is an excellent encapsulation of everything that makes One Piece so beloved. There’s plenty of action, humor, and heart, all doled out in equal measure. Whether or not you’re a massive One Piece fan, Film: Red will entertain you for the entirety of its runtime and remind you of what it is that drew you to the series in the first place. SCORE: 9.5/10 As ComingSoon’s review policy explains, a score of 9 equates to “Excellent.” Entertainment that reaches this level is at the top of its type. The gold standard that every creator aims to reach. Disclosure: The critic received a screener link for ComingSoon’s One Piece Film: Red review. RELATED: James Gunn & Peter Safran Named Co-CEOs of New DC Studios The series’ showrunner and writer, Seth Grahame-Smith, has left the series after finishing the scripts for all eight episodes of the first season. This move is reportedly due to the number of management changes occurring at Warner Bros. but is not related to yesterday’s news about James Gunn and Peter Safran becoming co-CEOs of DC Studios. Greg Berlanti and Berlanti Productions are still attached to produce. The series was originally set to focus on Alan Scott and Guy Gardner, the first Green Lantern and the famously cocky corps member, respectively. It will now follow John Stewart, one of the most recognizable Green Lanterns — in part due to his role in the Justice League and Justice League Unlimited animated series of the early-to-mid 2000s. Little else is known about the new storyline or whether Scott and Gardner will still appear. The show’s original official synopsis read: “Green Lantern reinvents the classic DC property through a story spanning decades and galaxies, beginning on Earth in 1941 with the very first Green Lantern, secretly gay FBI agent Alan Scott, and 1984, with cocky alpha male Guy Gardner and half-alien Bree Jarta. They’ll be joined by a multitude of other Lanterns — from comic book favorites to never-before-seen heroes.” A new logline has not yet been released. The film is out now on digital and arrives on Blu-ray and DVD on December 6. “As feuding brothers battle for control of the throne, daring and righteous mercenary leader Jan Žižka embarks on a mission to kidnap Lady Katherine, the fiancée of a powerful lord,” reads the film’s synopsis. “As Katherine becomes caught in a dangerous political game between monarchs, Jan falls in love with her strong spirit and dedication to saving the people. In a brave attempt to liberate her, he fights back with a rebel army, battling the corruption, greed, and betrayal that runs rampant among those clawing for power.” Tyler Treese: I was so impressed by Ben Foster’s performance. Obviously, he is such a great actor, but when did you know that he could put on that kind of gritty performance that you needed for this film? Petr Jákl: It was tough for him because he was 48 days from 56 days on set. So it was very physically difficult and I knew him from other movies before, of course, and I really admired him and I thought he was perfect for this part. So I was trying to get him, and once he said yes, there was like right after our call, and when we were discussing the story of Jan Žižka and how I wanna do it, I was so happy that I couldn’t describe it. It was an absolutely amazing feeling that I’ve got somebody like him on board, and then we started to discuss how we can make it happen in the way that it’s gonna be also for the Czech people, but also for the rest of the people in the world. We were going through the script. We were changing some stuff. We were discussing everything, and then he was training a lot with swords and this incredible weapon, a mace, which is like which was the only weapon that could destroy a helmet in medieval times. It was very tough for him physically. Also, he was flying every weekend back home to New York from Prague because he had a newborn baby and he wanted to be with her and his wife, so it was very difficult for him. One other thing I really loved about the film was the action sequences. It’s so cool seeing these medieval weapons and Žižka deploys some awesome traps as he was a very smart commander. I know you have a stunt background, and you’re a judoka, so how was it coming up with those stunts? Yeah, he’s known for inventing military strategies and new weapons. He basically invented also the first tanks because he was using wagons and moving wagons, and other strategies were including mud, smoke, and other stuff. Actually, he was using later on some shooting weapons. So I wanted to show it in the movie, and I wanted to show the beginning of it because this is from his youth. From times, like basically from 1402 when he was a paid mercenary who was paid for killing people or protecting somebody or kidnapping somebody. I just wanted to show how he became that great never-defeated general later on, eight years from this story. So I thought this is a great opportunity to show how invented some of those traps and stuff which he was using later on. Yeah, I was curious about the time period because when you think about Žižka, a lot of his greater triumphs come later in his life, but you choose to show it earlier in his life. We see him lose the eye. It’s incredible what he was able to do, but what made you choose that earlier time period? I know that gave you some more freedom because it’s not as documented. Definitely, I didn’t wanna describe his whole life. I wanted to describe him as a mercenary. Like this is his bad side, and then he was killing for money and basically lay down that he was changing and he was fighting for high reasons. This changed his heart. To be this big, the story needed to be from his years, like around 1402, because this was all happening there. Later on, he was already fighting for what he [believed in], he was already that warrior who knew what he wanted. It felt like it’s not that interesting to see how it all started. You have a great tragic love story in this film, which is all original. When you’re working within a historical drama, obviously, the goal is to stay true to kind of the feel of the story and the people within. So when you’re adding elements, how do you kind of balance that? This is always difficult and at the end of the day, the film has to work. That’s the most important thing. I always wanted to use everything, what I found out about Jan Žižka from those times, and I used everything that I could. Because we don’t know much about him from those days, I had to create something to make it work, like the whole story, his personal life, and everything. But at the end of the day, I was always working with a historian, who was telling me this is possible, this is not possible. This could happen. This couldn’t happen. So I was trying to be pretty accurate about everything. Then when we were editing the movie, I was doing it with Steven Rosenblum, who was an editor of Braveheart and The Last Samurai. So we were discussing all these details and things like, you know, how it should work, and we agree that it should be mainly about the love story of Katherine and Žižka and with all the fights around all the politics. But for us, you know, this was pretty important. Later on, when Dirk Westervelt, another editor who did Deadpool and Logan, he came on board, he agreed with us, and then we were focusing on all the fights to make them as realistic as possible because I wanted it to be as close as possible to reality what could happen. Because I’m a fighter, I’ve got this background, I was always testing it on myself if this is possible or not [laughs]. I was also curious since he’s such a legendary figure in Czech history, how has the reception, if any, differed between in the Czech Republic and then worldwide? Yeah, this is, I always wanted to do it like, you know, for Czech people, but of course, you know, for the others too. But right now, we are five weekends in theaters we are number one. They’ve got over 300,000 people already. Some people feel that they are proud that they are Czech after watching the movie. That was something that I always wanted. I wanted to push them a little bit to think about our history and see something that is this big figure differently and also to show how important is faith in our lives. If you see something that you don’t like, do something about it. Just don’t watch. I think with what is happening around us, it’s a very important message for [everyone].
