5 Essential John Carpenter Movies Everyone Should See
por Jeff Ames Oct 26, 2022

John Carpenter remains one of the most influential writers/directors/producers in Hollywood, crafting films that transcend their respective genres and deliver the type of sublime entertainment audiences are in dire need of in this day and age. Carpenter’s pictures are always unique and ambitious; bursting with creativity, novel ideas, fascinating characters, and intricate worlds. While many of his concepts faltered, particularly later efforts (i.e. Ghosts of Mars and Vampires), it’s hard to name another director who enjoyed the kind of sustained success Carpenter experienced throughout his early career, beginning with the incredible Assault on Precinct 13 in 1976.

If you’re not familiar with the man, here are five of his most essential works everyone should probably see. Then, when you’re ready to move on, check out his remaining oeuvre and enjoy more of this incredible director’s wild creativity.

The Thing (1982)

Link to video

John Carpenter’s genius is on full display in this terrifying, grotesque, and darkly humorous sci-fi horror classic about a group of scientists battling a shape-shifting alien on a remote outpost in Antarctica. Equal parts suspenseful and revolting — thanks to a slew of sensational practical effects — The Thing stands as a monumental bit of cinema, a film that brushes off any and all calls for crowd-pleasing entertainment and instead delivers enough existential dread to ensure you walk away questioning the meaning of life itself.

The Thing rocks you, shocks you, and then slaps you in the face with heavy nihilism coated in buckets of blood and gore. It’s one helluva cinematic experience you’re not likely to forget, and it stars the always-charismatic Kurt Russell to boot! There’s also the bonus of seeing Wilford Brimley, everyone’s favorite Quaker Oats fella, go batshit crazy. Seriously, this movie has it all and remains the most absorbing film of Carpenter’s distinguished career.

Halloween (1978)

Link to video

Halloween may chug along at a slow pace for its first hour, during which Michael Myers — the man, the myth, the legend — cruises around Haddonfield in a kick-ass station wagon, but when our masked “shape” finally gets around to murdering the hell out of a group of horny babysitters (and their dopy boyfriends) — including lovable girl-next-door Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) — Carpenter’s classic slasher kicks into an otherworldly gear that leaves you chewing your nails like popcorn.

No, really. Halloween is still scary (and weird) as hell, despite releasing way back in 1978.

Countless sequels and knockoffs have diluted the pic’s impact over the years, but the granddaddy of all slashers remains the best of the bunch if only for its minimalistic qualities — that iconic score, the simplistic characters and setup, the grisly fatalities. To underline the creep factor, Myers’ intentions are never fully explained — “He’s pure evil,” Dr. Loomis (Donald Pleasence) cries time and again to anyone within earshot. The killer rides into town, murders some people, and vanishes without a trace — he’s like the Boogieman, just more cunning. He often positions his victims’ corpses like ritualistic offerings on beds, tucks them inside cabinets or hides them in shadows from which they spring at the opportune moment to scare the bejesus out of unsuspecting passerby like workers in a demented funhouse.

Halloween is an absolutely brilliant piece of American cinema, and proof that sometimes less is definitely more.

Christine (1983)

Link to video

The novelty of Christine lies in its concept — the idea that man’s best friend (his car) could ultimately lead to his undoing. In this case, lovable young nerd Arnie Cunningham (Keith Gordon) purchases a 1958 Plymouth Fury and quickly succumbs to its otherworldly spell. Literally. The car, you see, has an evil mind of its own; one that seduces Arnie and, like some sort of demented Bumblebee, changes his life for the better. At least initially. As time goes on, Christine and Arnie become more attached and volatile, leading the car-crossed lovers (thank you!) to wage war on local bullies, unsuspecting girlfriends, and even Arnie’s best pal Dennis (John Stockwell). People are crushed, burned, run over, and nearly choked to death in a film that delights and terrifies in equal measure — the image of Christine slowly pursuing a victim whilst engulfed in flames is pure horror cinema at its finest.

Still, for all its slow-burning suspense and brutality, Christine fumbles the ball en route to perfection. The actors carrying the load aren’t up to the challenge and often flounder in the big dramatic moments. We never truly bond with Arnie enough to care much about his sudden change in character later on, and the heavy-handed Stephen King-isms — i.e. one-dimensional bullies, sexually frustrated men, and cocaine-fueled plot points — feel more forced than necessary.

So, why include Christine on this list? Because, for all of its blemishes, silly performances, and cheesy FX, Christine remains pure, unadulterated John Carpenter. Much of his work was designed as simple B-movie entertainment replete with clunky dialogue and stilted direction. Christine embraces its genre trappings and delivers everything one could ask for — well-staged set pieces, genuine scares, and a wicked soundtrack — but tacks on an indelible message that takes aim at America’s lust for products: in a world driven by consumerism, you get what you pay for.

Big Trouble in Little China (1986)

Link to video

John Carpenter enjoyed branching out into different genres, delivering the likes of Starman and the underrated Memoirs of an Invisible Man as a result. Big Trouble in Little China sees the maestro testing his comedic chops, and by God does he deliver one of the most entertaining (and oddly appealing) films ever assembled.

Re-teaming with Kurt Russell for the fourth time in just under a decade, Carpenter blends fantasy, action, comedy, and horror into one enigmatic adventure that confused audiences upon its release but has since (like most Carpenter productions) gained a cult following. Rightfully so. From start to finish, China dazzles with its unique set design and costumes, colorful characters (Russell has a ball playing Jack Burton, a big-hearted John Wayne-type with enough machismo to fuel a dozen action flicks), and riotous set pieces. It’s not quite as cool today as it was when I was a kid, but Big Trouble in Little China still packs enough action, romance, horror, and goofy laughs to stand as an incredible bit of B-movie entertainment that requires, nay demands to be seen with a big ole bowl of popcorn. Seriously, this is the type of film lacking in today’s marketplace.*

At the very least, it’s one of the few pictures where Kim Cattrall is actually tolerable, if not outright likable.

Escape from New York (1981)

Link to video

Dark, brooding, and violent, Escape from New York stands as one of John Carpenter’s most enduring films thanks to its wondrous visuals, unique characters and incredible (for its relatively modest production) world building.

Still, what makes this Carpenter entry pop is Kurt Russell’s terrific turn as the gruff, eyepatch-wearing Snake Plissken — the most badass of badasses, and one of the greatest action heroes to grace the screen. The man is of the no-nonsense variety. He takes orders from no one, cares little about anyone, and only embarks on a suicidal mission to rescue the President (Donald Pleasence) when his own ass is on the line.

While the moody dystopian visuals haven’t aged quite well, there’s a certain charm in New York’s lavish matte paintings, meticulously crafted sets, chandelier-clad cars, and dense city streets peppered with heads-on-spikes, violent mobs, and armor-toting station wagons. Plus, you get an incredible cast that includes Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnine, and Harry Dean Stanton. What’s not to love?

It may not pop like some of the more polished works in the genre, but Escape from New York still delights as a counterpunch to big-budget fare and demonstrates Carpenter’s incredible knack for B-movie cinema. Just ignore the overproduced sequel and you’ll be fine.

*To be fair, the incredible Everything Everywhere All at Once gave me heavy Big Trouble in Little China vibes. More of this, please.

The Riddler: Year One Trailer Previews Paul Dano's Comic Prequel
por Anthony Nash Oct 25, 2022

A new trailer for the upcoming Riddler: Year One comic has been released, detailing both the origin of the character from The Batman as well as Paul Dano’s desire to further explore the character he played.

RELATED: The Batman Spin-off Movies Starring Villains in Early Development

The trailer itself details some of the panels from the first issue of the comic, which are illustrated by artist Stevan Subic. The comic will serve as a prequel to the events of Matt Reeves’ The Batman film and will chronicle the first year of Edward Nashton using his Riddler persona. The book itself is similar in concept to that of Frank Miller’s 1986 comic Batman: Year One, which explored Batman’s first year as the iconic Caped Crusader.

Check out the trailer for Riddler: Year One below:

Link to video

In the trailer, actor Paul Dano — who played The Riddler in The Batman — speaks with director Matt Reeves. Dano reveals that the idea for the comic came after speaking with Reeves about his own ideas for the character, leading Reeves to contact DC’s Jim Lee and pitch the idea. Dano also said that he was excited to “geek out” about the world of Batman.

RELATED: The Batman Sequel Finds Its Writers

“To really geek out about Batman and the history, it just really gripped me,” Dano said. “The idea here was to enter the comic in a really subjective way, so a lot of this is about somebody like Edward Nashton and what is going on inside his head. And I always felt like the only positive affirmation Edward Nashton has ever gotten in his entire life was from solving riddles or playing games … It’s become its own thing as it’s progressed.”

The first issue for Riddler: Year One is available now, with the remaining five set to release bimonthly.

James Gunn & Peter Safran Named Co-CEOs of New DC Studios
por Anthony Nash Oct 25, 2022

In a shocking move, filmmaker James Gunn and producer Peter Safran have been chosen to head up DC’s film, TV, and animation division as co-chairs of a newly formed division within Warner Bros. Discovery.

RELATED: Joker 2 Cinematographer: Lady Gaga Is ‘A Cool Fit’ in the Sequel

The announcement (via The Hollywood Reporter) sees both Gunn and Safran named as co-CEOs of the newly formed DC Studios, a division within Warner Bros. Discovery that will replace DC Films. The deal will run for four years, with Gunn exclusively working with DC within those four years. The move also puts an end to a months-long search by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav to try and find a replacement for former DC Films head Walter Hamada, who left the studio.

While it’s unconventional that a filmmaker is given a top executive role overseeing an entire division, Gunn’s success in the DC world — his film The Suicide Squad and HBO show Peacemaker have been massive hits — as well as his success in the larger world of comic book movies (with the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise) were likely a huge boon to him. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gunn will focus on the creative side with Safran — a producer with credits on a ton of films, including past DC films Aquaman and Shazam! — will focus on the business and production side of the division.

The report mentions that both are still expected to continue directing and producing other projects. Also important to note is the fact that, according to early reports, the separate universes established at DC — including that of Todd Phillips’ Joker films — will not be overseen by Gunn and Safran. At this point, it’s unknown if Matt Reeves’ The Batman films will be, but any future DC project will be overseen by Gunn and Safran moving forward.

RELATED: James Gunn Pitched Mystery DC Movie to Warner Bros. Discovery

“DC has among the most entertaining, powerful, and iconic characters in the world, and I am thrilled to have the singular and complementary talents of James and Peter joining our world-class team and overseeing the creative direction of the storied DC Universe,” said David Zaslav in a statement. “Their decades of experience in filmmaking, close ties to the creative community, and proven track record thrilling superhero fans around the globe make them uniquely qualified to develop a long-term strategy across film, TV, and animation and take this iconic franchise to the next level of creative storytelling.”

Nope Interview: Jordan Peele & Keke Palmer on Enduring Themes
por Tyler Treese Oct 25, 2022

ComingSoon Editor-in-Chief Tyler Treese spoke with Nope director Jordan Peele and star Keke Palmer. Nope is now available digitally and releases on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on October 25.

Link to video

Tyler Treese: Jordan, one of the elements that really resonated with me is how humans expect animals and thus nature to confine to the standards that they’ve created. Gordy is killed when he acts naturally, as a frightened chimpanzee would act. The horses aren’t used in commercials if they’re not acting the right way, and Jean Jacket is acting naturally. Can you speak to that element of nature and taming? Because it’s really stuck with me and made me examine my own, you know, actions.

Jordan Peele: A lot of people, I don’t think, even picked up necessarily in [their] first viewing on the connections between Gordy the chimp, who is a trained animal who shouldn’t be in this situation, and Jean Jacket, who is, for all intents and purposes, also a trained animal. The underlying connection between these animals and our characters, I think, is also present. In a way, I look at all of them as trained animals, and I look at all of us as trained animals as well. So the film in itself comes back to being about this system of exploitation we’re all kind of wrapped up in, in our own different ways.

Keke, Em’s a hustler. She’s so ambitious in so many different facets of her life and she wants to achieve it all, and she can go into salesmen mode so well. You’re so multi-talented yourself and stay super busy. How is it bringing that element to the character and shining when the light’s put on her?

Keke Palmer: It was an honor because I think that’s a part of my artistry that has only ever existed online. Before this project and this opportunity, I think primarily I was known for very dramatic stuff with Akeelah and the Bee or maybe some kid work, but that aspect of my artistry, I never really got to showcase in this regard. So it was a lot of fun being able to explore that and then also explore the transition out of that to when Emerald is faced with bigger themes in this film, from family to life or death. That whole evolution … I think that was so exciting because it’s so rare to get a character that you get to explore all those different places. That’s how humanity is, but we don’t always get to see it in a movie. So I was really excited about being able to start at that point, this vibrant place, and then really come to this grounded, introspective, and confused state.

Jordan, you had such a wonderful conversation with Hideo Kojima recently. Are you interested in working in an interactive medium, either games or something else?

Jordan Peele: It’s funny; he asked the same, but absolutely. I do love games. I think that they are very connected to storytelling in that I truly believe the art form is about empathy. It’s about putting yourself in somebody else’s shoes and understanding what it might feel like to be someone else. So yeah, yes is the answer.

Keke, I haven’t seen any other film this year create a dialogue like Nope. it just resonated with people. People are still talking about the themes and it’s really stuck with people. As a creative yourself, what does it mean for you to be working on projects that are connecting with people and have a lasting impact? It’s not “you watch it one day and you forget about it the next.”

Keke Palmer: It’s the gift that keeps on giving. It really, really is. It means so much as an artist to put out something that’s impactful. And I think with Jordan, it’s exceptionally unique because not only is it something impactful, but it’s also something that can be commercial in a really real way. So many people seeing it and many people having a different perspective of it, and at the same time, it all still is rooted in something that is truthful. I think that is the part for me that’s just massive in that regard, and it’s totally something I’ve never experienced before.

Prime Video offered no other context to the pictures and didn’t not explain who the four people were. And given the lighting, it’s tough to make out which actors they could be. Kyle MacLachlan, Xelia Mendes-Jones, Aaron Moten, Ella Purnell, and Walton Goggins have all been confirmed for the show.

This is the first official look at the show, as set pictures leaked out in July. Those photos showed off a ruined town and even a glimpse at some power armor.

Fallout takes place in the 1940s after a nuclear war and the television series will feature Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner as showrunners. The Fallout series was launched in 1997 on PC by Interplay Productions. However, its popularity ballooned in 2008 after Bethesda released Fallout 3 for consoles and PC, which gave it an ambitious action spin similar to its The Elder Scrolls fantasy games. Joker 2 Cinematographer: Lady Gaga Is 'A Cool Fit' in the Sequel
por Anthony Nash Oct 25, 2022

The upcoming sequel Joker: Folie à Deux is set to begin filming sometime soon, and ahead of the project’s start, cinematographer Lawrence Sher spoke about how star Lady Gaga will fit into the film.

RELATED: Margot Robbie Expects Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn Will Be Incredible

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in a recent appearance on the Behind the Screen podcast, Sher said that production is set to begin on the film in about five or six weeks. Sher revealed that filming will largely be shot on soundstages in Los Angeles and on location in New York and that he was excited to work with Lady Gaga, who he thinks will be a “really cool fit.”

“She’s going to be a really cool fit for this movie and will create a similar kind of magic that Joaquin brought by himself,” Sher said. “The combination of the two will be exactly what we hope, which is exciting, and we’ll find magic every day on set. Hopefully, we’ll also have a bit of madness in there. We like when there is a little bit of chaos.”

Joker: Folie à Deux will once again be directed by Todd Phillips. The film will feature the return of Joaquin Phoenix as he reprises his Oscar-winning role as the titular DC villain. He will be joined by Grammy-winning superstar Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, making her the latest actress to portray the beloved DC character, following Margot Robbie and Kaley Cuoco.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special Trailer Teases the Search for Kevin Bacon
por Anthony Nash Oct 25, 2022

With just a couple of weeks until the holiday season officially kicks off, Marvel Studios has released the official trailer and release date for the highly anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.

RELATED: The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special Won’t Feature Every Team Member

The special, which will premiere on Disney+ on November 25, 2022, sees the Guardians traveling to Earth during Christmas time. Their goal is to find a gift for Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), who has been upset following Gamora’s disappearance at the end of Avengers: Endgame.

Their plan leads them to Hollywood, where Drax and Mantis go out in search of Kevin Bacon (who is playing himself in the special), an actor Star-Lord has praised in past films.

Check out the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special trailer below:

The first trailer also gives fans an updated look at the group of Guardians, most notably Groot — who is much bigger than he was when we last saw him — as he continues to grow back into his original self. Also included in the trailer are brief looks at Star-Lord, Cosmo, Mantis, Rocket Raccoon, Nebula, and more.

The space-traveling team was last seen in this year’s Thor: Love and Thunder, where they teamed up with Chris Hemsworth’s Thor for some intergalactic adventures in the film’s first act. Though Groot was the focus of the recent Disney+ series of shorts titled I Am Groot, the team will appear in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on May 5, 2023 following the Holiday Special.

Black Adam Is Joining MultiVersus This Week
por Michael Leri Oct 25, 2022

It seemed likely that Black Adam would be coming to MultiVersus near the release of the film and while he wasn’t there for its premiere, he will be joining the roster soon. Player First Games confirmed that the DC fighter is making his way to the lineup sometime this week.

RELATED: The Rock Explains Why Black Adam vs. Superman Isn’t the Next Step

The studio didn’t give a specific date in its announcement tweet. However, his inclusion will come alongside an Arcade mode. But, fittingly, Player First Games didn’t go into much detail on what this mode will be.

Dataminers have found that a character named Reign Dog, a play on the game’s original fighter Reindog, is a boss in this mode and is Reindog with boosted stats, but that has yet to be confirmed. Previous leaks have also pointed to Black Adam’s inclusion on October 25, but it seems as though he was slightly delayed.

Black Adam’s move set remains a mystery as the announcement trailer didn’t have any gameplay. More information and a more in-depth breakdown are inevitably going to launch alongside the character, though.

Damon Lindelof's Star Wars Movie to Be Set After The Rise of Skywalker
por Maggie Dela Paz Oct 25, 2022

Following the recent news about Lucasfilm’s newest Star Wars movie, which is being made by Emmy winner Damon Lindelof and Oscar-winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, new details about the secret project have finally been revealed. A new report by The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Lindelof has reportedly been developing the project for months now.

RELATED: Diego Luna Denies Rumors of Rogue One Alternate Ending

According to the outlet’s sources, Lindelof’s untitled Star Wars movie will be a standalone feature set after the events of J.J. Abrams’ 2019 film The Rise of Skywalker. It was also revealed that some characters from the sequel trilogy may appear in the upcoming film.

The outlet’s sources also note that Lindelof led a secret writers’ room following this year’s Star Wars Celebration. For a two-week session in July, Lindelof was joined by Patrick Somerville (Leftovers, Station Eleven), Rayna McClendon (Obi-Wan Kenobi, Willow), Andy Greenwald (Briarpatch), Dave Filoni (Ahsoka), and more. In addition, Justin Britt-Gibson (The Counterpart) has been enlisted to write the project’s screenplay with Lindelof.

Oscar-winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy has also signed on to direct the untitled project. Obaid-Chinoy recently directed two episodes of Marvel Studios’ Disney+ series Ms. Marvel.

Further details about Lucasfilm’s newest Star Wars feature are still being kept under wraps. The studio currently has two untitled projects set for December 2025 and December 2027. It remains to be seen if Lindelof and Obaid-Chinoy’s film would take one of these release windows.

This upcoming project will be added to Lucasfilm’s growing list of ongoing film projects, which includes the Taika Waititi-directed film, the long-in-development Rogue Squadron movie from Patty Jenkins, and the Kevin Feige-produced movie.

The Rock Explains Why Black Adam vs. Superman Isn't the Next Step
por Anthony Nash Oct 25, 2022

It’s no secret anymore that Henry Cavill is officially back as Superman, having appeared in Black Adam briefly while also confirming rumors that he was back over Instagram. However, despite his return, actor Dwayne Johnson says a Black Adam vs. Superman showdown isn’t what’s next on the horizon.

RELATED: Henry Cavill Confirms His Return to the Role of Superman

In a recent tweet talking about his appearance on the Black Adam red carpet, Johnson reiterated various comments he has made recently. Namely, that a Black Adam and Superman showdown isn’t “the next step,” with more storytelling to do and characters to establish before getting to that point.

“We have a lot more long term storytelling to do before that historic DCEU showdown and more new characters to establish,” said Johnson in the tweet.

While Johnson’s comments may disappoint some fans who were hoping for a more imminent showdown between two of the strongest characters in DC history, the actor does eventually know the two will clash. During this summer’s San Diego Comic-Con, Johnson was asked about whether or not he plans on making a film where the two fight, to which Johnson replied “absolutely,” and that it was “the whole point” of joining DC as Black Adam.

“I’ve been waiting for someone to step up and address the fans and say, ‘Hey, we hear you,’” Johnson said at the time. “So finally, after many months turned into many years, we ended up with what we ended up at. And the whole goal and intention now is to this new era, new time. Now let’s build out.”

Black Adam features the introduction of Dwayne Johnson as the titular anti-hero, whose background story was first teased during 2019’s Shazam! This marks the character’s live-action debut after only appearing in animated shows and films such as Young Justice.

RELATED: Black Adam Review: Solid Action That’s Emotionally Empty

Joining Johnson is Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate, Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone, and Aldis Hodge as Hawkman. Other cast members include Sarah Shahi, Marwan Kenzari, James Cusati-Moyer, Bodhi Sabongui, Mo Amer, and Uli Latukefu.

The Good Nurse Stars Nnamdi Asomugha & Noah Emmerich Discuss True Story
por Tyler Treese Oct 25, 2022

ComingSoon Editor-in-Chief Tyler Treese spoke with The Good Nurse stars Nnamdi Asomugha and Noah Emmerich, who both star in the true crime drama, about its disturbing true story. The film is in select theaters now and will release for streaming through Netflix on October 26.

“Nurse Amy Loughren is shocked when Charlie Cullen, one of her colleagues, is found responsible for the murder of dozens of patients over a period of sixteen years, across two states and nine hospitals, without being charged,” reads the film’s synopsis.

Link to video

Tyler Treese: Nnamdi, your acting career has been a real joy. You were so incredible in Crown Heights, and this is another film based on a true story. What drives you to get involved with these films that really highlight the triumphs and failures of humanity?

Nnamdi Asomugha: I think the thing for me is the fact that they’re stories about superheroes, but they aren’t necessarily the superheroes we grew up with. But they are everyday superheroes, and from Crown Heights to The Good Nurse, that’s people that are sticking their necks out to try to defend the little people, and I think that’s what draws me to these projects.

RELATED: The Good Nurse Director Tobias Lindholm on Focusing on Heroes Rather Than Serial Killers

Noah, one of the most disgusting elements of this film is just how kind of complicit these health centers were in covering up what was going on, trying to protect the business first and foremost. What did you find most intriguing about that element? Because that’s an element of healthcare that isn’t really discussed as often.

Noah Emmerich: Yeah, I mean, it’s kind of horrifying, but if you break it down, it adds up, it makes sense. Corporations are profit machines, and when you put a profit machine in charge of healthcare, you get some funny results. We don’t tend to think of healthcare as something that’s a profit-driven business, but like every other business in America, it is. It’s not a nonprofit business, it’s a for-profit business. We’re the only western nation in the world that doesn’t have healthcare as a human right, and this is part of the problem. I mean, it doesn’t get worse than what happened in this story. So I definitely felt it was an important thing to illuminate, to start talking about, to have part of our conversation. So I’m grateful to be part of this story and hopefully, it motivates some conversations and maybe some change.

Nnamdi, you have some really tense exchanges in the film. Can you speak to bringing that intensity because it really underlines the desire for your character to bring justice?

Yeah, I think the goal, well, anytime that you’re playing a role of a detective, there’s strategy in how you speak to someone and the things that you’re trying to pull from them. You gotta go in and be calm and be smooth and collected the entire time, and hopefully, they’ll cooperate. So that was the goal for most of the film. But then there’s that moment where Danny Baldwin, my character, blows up at the head of the hospital because it had just reached that point, and in talking with the real guy and understanding what got him to that place, it was really that he had been calm for so long. He had taken people shutting doors in his face and his partner Tim, they were hitting roadblocks at every turn. I think that was that moment where, he was so frustrated, that he had to let loose and that intensity showed. But that wasn’t…that’s not who he was the entire time. His thing was about being collected and trying to get information that way, but when it doesn’t work, you have to change your tactic.

Winner: Emilia Jones, Kathryn Newton & More Join Dark Comedy Biopic
por Maggie Dela Paz Oct 25, 2022

According to Deadline, CODA and Locke & Key breakout Emilia Jones has been tapped for the leading role in the upcoming biographical darkly comedy film titled Winner, centering around former American intelligence specialist Reality Leigh Winner, who became a key figure in uncovering Russia’s involvement in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

RELATED: Maria: Angelina Jolie to Lead Pablo Larraín’s Maria Callas Biopic Film

Freaky star Kathryn Newton and Danny Ramira (Top Gun: Maverick) have also signed on to the project along with Emmy nominees Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover) and Connie Britton (American Horror Story). The latter stars are set to play the respective roles of Reality’s parents.

“The film follows Winner (Jones), a brilliant young misfit from Texas who finds her morals challenged while serving in the U.S. Air Force and working as an NSA contractor,” reads the synopsis. “It will offer a fresh take on the traditional whistleblower thriller; the coming-of-age story follows an idealistic young woman persecuted for standing by her principles.”

Winner is being directed by The Spy Who Dumped Me filmmaker Susanna Fogel from a screenplay written by Kerry Howley, based on her 2017 New York Magazine article. Production has already started on the project.

RELATED: The Young King: Kiersey Clemons & More to Lead Drag Comedy Film

“As a filmmaker, I strive to tell stories that interrogate the world we live in and the systems that are broken in it,” Fogel said in a statement. “But in a fun way. Reality Winner is the perfect heroine for a film that meditates on ideas of personal power, morality, and finding your voice. She’s a true individual: she speaks many languages, she loves her guns, she could destroy you on Twitter, and her obsession with Pikachu is unmatched. Clearly, she’s the perfect mouthpiece for a generation of people who are unique and fed up with feeling powerless. And there is no one more perfect to play her than Emilia Jones, one of the most exciting young actresses working today. I hope Reality’s story will inspire others to speak up and defend their beliefs, whatever the cost. I’m thrilled to partner with this team of artists and activists to bring this movie to life.”

Winner is produced by Fogel, Amanda Phillips, Shivani Rawat, Julie Goldstein, Scott Budnick, and Ameet Shukla. It is executive produced by Dani Melia, Peter Saraf, Daniel Bekerman, Connor Flanagan, and Big Beach Films.
