| | | Sony Announces State of Play for Tomorrow Just Hours After Nintendo's Direct | | by Michael Leri Sep 13, 2022 | | Nintendo isn’t the only console maker holding a special presentation tomorrow, as Sony will be having a stream of its own just a few hours later. Sony announced a State of Play for September 13 at 3 p.m. PT that will have updates for games on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation VR2. MORE: Everything Announced at the Ubisoft Forward September 2022 Event The accompanying PlayStation Blog post gave a few more details, noting that it will be a 20-minute show celebrating games from Japanese developers, which is fitting since Tokyo Game Show kicks off on September 15. And while it will have updates from games from Japanese studios, there will also be some “surprises” from teams across the world. All in all, it will have updates and “fresh gameplay footage” for 10 different games. It’s unknown exactly what will be there, however the title and runtime imply that it will be a more modest show. Many are likely expecting a huge E3-like presentation, but those are called PlayStation Showcases, not State of Plays. MORE: Assassin’s Creed Multiplayer Game in Development From Rainbow 6 Siege, For Honor Devs The June 2022 State of Play also had plenty of Japanese games like the Resident Evil 4 remake, Resident Evil Village on PS VR2, Street Fighter 6, and Final Fantasy XVI, meaning it’s possible that one or more of those games makes a reappearance during this newly announced Sony stream. The post Sony Announces State of Play for Tomorrow Just Hours After Nintendo’s Direct appeared first on ComingSoon.net. | | | | | Assassin's Creed Multiplayer Game in Development From Rainbow 6 Siege, For Honor Devs | | by Michael Leri Sep 13, 2022 | | Ubisoft announced a handful of Assassin’s Creed games during its recent showcase. The company also said it was “investigating” bringing back multiplayer Assassin’s Creed experiences, but stopped there at that nebulous commitment. However, Ubisoft spoke more substantially about a multiplayer Assassin’s Creed game behind closed doors through a project called (or codenamed) Invictus. Axios’ report states that Invictus is being made by developers who worked on Rainbow 6 Siege and For Honor, both of which have been multiplayer staples for the publisher over the last generation. Invictus will also be part of Assassin’s Creed Infinity, which will act as a hub for future entries. Axios reporter Stephen Totilo shared more on Twitter, noting that Vice President Executive Producer Marc-Alexis Côté showed a concept image of familiar characters (and a minotaur-esque being), implying Invictus would involve protagonists and antagonists from past entries. Côté also noted that it wouldn’t have a central setting, meaning it would probably jump around to different time periods and places. RELATED: Assassin’s Creed Mirage Reveal Trailer Shows New Baghdad Location Côté was a little more straightforward with Eurogamer, telling the outlet that it is “part of [their] creative intention to bridge the different Assassin’s Creed games together in a multiplayer experience” that is “inspired from what [Ubisoft has] done in the past.” But even with those inspirations, it will still be a “new kind of multiplayer experience,” according to Côté. Assassin’s Creed has bucked multiplayer in its last few entries. While 2015’s universally maligned Unity had co-op, the series hasn’t had competitive multiplayer since 2014’s Black Flag. The tradition started in 2010’s Brotherhood and saw users tracking down and stalking their target while avoiding those on their tail. Côté also confirmed to Axios that Ubisoft is not developing a remaster of the original Assassin’s Creed or some sort of crossover with Origins, both of which were heavily rumored. However, he didn’t want to completely close the door on the idea of developing an upgraded version of that 2007 debut sometime down the line. RELATED: Everything Announced at the Ubisoft Forward September 2022 Event Côté also added that Red, the Japan-based entry, will be getting more development time in order to “reach [a] higher quality and be more sustainable from a human and technological point of view.” Red will also be an “epic” title with years of post-launch content and be akin to Valhalla and Odyssey in that regard. But even though Red will be more akin to those two games, Hexe won’t be cut from that same cloth. Côté noted that Ubisoft is “not coming out with another 150-hour game right after Red” and that Red and Hexe can live together concurrently because they are structured differently. Ubisoft has yet to confirm exactly what Hexe will be and its teaser trailer was very vague, but earlier reports noted it would take place during the Holy Roman Empire during the 16th century and revolve around witch hunts. Sure, some of the jokes are dated and Will Ferrell’s schtick grew a bit tiresome a while back, but the film still tickles the funny bone and makes for a simple, lighthearted piece of entertainment. So, just to drive home that point, here are the funniest scenes in Talladega Nights that hold up today! Knife in the Leg For those unaware, the plot of Talladega Nights revolves around race car driver Ricky Bobby, who endures a Days of Thunder-esque wreck midway through the film that leaves him paralyzed. Well, actually, he’s not paralyzed, he just thinks he is, which leads to this bit: Glenn is Dead During the climatic race, Ricky Bobby’s crew informs him that Glenn, one of their staff, tragically died the night before, but only after wishing for a victory. Of course, Glenn pops around the corner and ruins the ruse, which was designed to give Ricky Bobby extra motivation to drive harder. I’m On Fire The marketing blitz behind Talladega Nights leaned heavily on the film’s signature image: Will Ferrell running around a race track in his underpants screaming for help from Tom Cruise. Not only was this a great trailer stinger, but the moment also brought the house down on the opening night. Cougar in the Car In order to regain his confidence, Ricky Bobby must learn how to drive with a cougar in his car. The bit is absolutely outlandish, but the fact that Ferrell plays the scene so matter-of-factly is what really sells the comedy. I Like Crepes Sacha Baron Cohen has only a handful of scenes as Ricky Bobby’s French nemesis Jean Girard, but he steals every moment thanks to his ridiculous accent and over-the-top persona. That his male lover is a dog trainer played by Andy Richter is just icing on the cake. Still, Cohen’s best bit is his introduction during which he pins Ricky Bobby and gives him a very difficult ultimatum revolving around crepes and a broken arm. Cal Calls Ricky Bobby After the debilitating crash, Ricky Bobby’s world turns upside down. He loses his car, his money, and has to watch his wife run off with his best friend, Cal. Of course, Cal has a hard time grasping the gravity of the situation and insists on remaining friends with Ricky Bobby, leading to this humorous telephone exchange. The Big Finale Finally, one of the film’s best bits occurs during the final race in which Ricky Bobby and Jean Girard wreck, emerge from their vehicles, and sprint to the finish line amidst Pat Benatar’s “We Belong” before locking lips as a show of good sportsmanship. It’s a crazy, over-the-top ending that still works all these years later. More than 30 years after making his actorial debut in The Karate Kid Part III, Thomas Ian Griffith reprised his role as Terry Silver in the recently released Cobra Kai Season 5. While talking with ComingSoon, Griffith opened up about the “incredible journey” that brought him back as the Cobra Kai dojo leader before focusing on the season’s finale, which the actor described as “Shakespearean.” “Following the shocking results of the All Valley Tournament, Season 5 finds Terry Silver expanding the Cobra Kai empire and trying to make his “No Mercy” style of karate the only game in town,” reads the synopsis. “With Kreese behind bars and Johnny Lawrence setting karate aside to focus on repairing the damage he’s caused, Daniel LaRusso must call on an old friend for help.” Tudor Leonte: You’re reprising the role of Terry Silver after more than 30 years. What does it mean for you to be part of the original trilogy that really sparked it all? Thomas Ian Griffith: It’s been an incredible journey. The Karate Kid Part III was my first film. John Avildsen took a chance on an unknown New York actor. I thought that was gonna be it. We created this archetypal over-the-top character, and it was funny in a way. It fit the time when of those movies for villains and never expected 30 years later to come back and be doing this, not in my wildest dreams. In fact, when I first heard about the show, I was like, ‘Oh my God, this is gonna be a disaster.’ Then I watched the first season, and I binge it going, ‘This is fantastic. Billy’s great and Ralph is great. The writing’s great, it’s nostalgic and funny and irreverent as hell.’ Again though, I never thought Terry Silver would fit into that world. I thought it was about just those guys at the OGs. Then, around Season 3, I started to hear rumors and I got calls and say, ‘Hey, can we use a clip of you from The Karate Kid?’ I was like, ‘What?’ You know? And even then when the guys first called, I thought, ‘Mmh, they’re gonna wanna bring that character back for a couple of apples, an episode or two. It’s like, it’s not my thing.’ But then when they pitched this incredible arc that they had with all these dimensions and colors, it was like, ‘Oh, wait a second. This is something special. I gotta jump at this.’ It’s just unexpected, and I’m just so proud to be a part of it. Let’s play the devil’s advocate for a moment. Why do you think Daniel seems so obsessed with stopping Cobra Kai guys and Terry Silver in particular? Griffith: I think he carries a lot of baggage, and I had that influence on him young, and I think when you have those experiences, they’re hard to let go of. He is also honoring his tradition. It’s a great story because Miyagi-Do and everything means so much to him. On the flip side, so does Cobra Kai [to me], help me get through this terrible time, post-Vietnam and all this stuff. So it’s like, there’s two men that are so passionate about what they do, and it’s just an admissible quality. Will they be able to get together? Now, there’s respect there, but still, they just because the philosophy is… it’s too gentle to say the soft and the hard, but if we just put it like that, it’s like they can’t coexist. He’s fighting for what he believes as is Terry Silver, which sets up the great showdown that we have at the end. You all saw what happened, which I can’t believe that happened. [Laughs] No, obviously, it was a great ending. It was an epic Shakespearean ending. Luhrmann spoke about how Black music influenced Elvis and his work on The Get Down. Elvis is now available digitally and is streaming on HBO Max and will be available in 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on September 13. “From his rise to fame to his unprecedented superstardom, rock ‘n’ roll icon Elvis Presley maintains a complicated relationship with his enigmatic manager, Colonel Tom Parker, over the course of 20 years,” reads the film’s synopsis. “Central to Presley’s journey and happiness is one of the most influential people in his life — Priscilla.” Tyler Treese: Elvis is this larger-than-life figure. What was the biggest challenge in capturing that scope of his persona and the cultural impact he had while also showcasing the person beneath that? Because it’s so easy to get like caught up in the myth. Baz Luhrmann: You’ve actually answered it kind of perfectly. It’s so easy to get caught in the myth, and the biggest challenge — and I think this is where Austin Butler’s incredible dedication, almost inhuman dedication — is to humanize Elvis. Like the person, you know? You’re right. Did he do a great job of reproducing Elvis on stage in Vegas? Yes. Was I able to say, “look, that’s exactly the camera angle,” and copy it? Yes. But the thing that an audience really wants to understand is, “who is this human being? Where did he come from?” There was no precedent for Elvis Presley. It’s a bit like when I did The Get Down [a series created by Luhrmann.] I worked with Grandmaster Flash — really close friends, we were — and he said, “we thought that hip hop would not come outside the Bronx.” So what was going on in terms of Black music, which I really wanted to show — no black music, no Elvis — And the sounds, and then the chain reaction, blending it with gospel and country. But where does that person come from? “What kind of human being is mocked at school, hangs out on Beale Street, and then finds his own musical language and style that goes on to become the biggest influence in the globe? There just wasn’t a precedent, but what is the person like? So that’s the main trial, like what is the person like? That was the biggest challenge. Beyond Elvis, this film covers decades of America. We see these major political events occur, we see segregation, and it’s this exploration of Americana to a degree. So as an Australian, how rewarding was the research period? Because I feel like sometimes we do need an outside eye to really capture the narrative. It’s probably something in that, Tyler. Not only am I an outside eye, [but] I come from a tiny, tiny country town. So America … it was my attraction and joy to just lose myself in America, in the 50s, 60s, and 70s, and really understand the American journey through the canvas — using Elvis kind of as a canvas — that’s what got me going. I went to live it, you know? When I make my movies, I just live it. I had two years [where] I was up and down from Memphis. At one stage, I had a space at Graceland with every photo we could find of Elvis, charts, and things like that. Tracking down that scene in the Pentecostal tent where Elvis was just running those kids, I found that little boy that goes to drag him back. I found that boy as a much older man, he passed away just last year. And I have a video of him telling that story verbatim. I didn’t make that story up, it’s just what happened, you know? So to me, that’s the most enjoyable part of the process. Just living the research and living the world, you know? And then the more difficult part is actually making it. I was curious about your writing process because Tom Parker is so pivotal to Elvis, but you use him as an anchor point for the film’s narrative. When writing the film, when did you realize that this was the direction to go? Because their toxic relationship is so interesting and that leads to a great movie. Elvis Presley represents America, but I couldn’t work out how to get in. And then … I guess it was a change, a change that we’re experiencing now, this kind of division in America and in the world … and that was sort of happening. Then I started to learn a lot about the Colonel, and I went, “ah!” In the same way that Amadeus isn’t really about Mozart, there are two characters in that story, one called Salieri, and that movie’s about jealousy. And I thought, “gee, Colonel would be a great counterpoint.” Because one is about the American idea of sell and brand and roll up and hype, you know? And what the other character is kind of pure soul, who’s a sort of funnel for all that’s happening around him, musically and culturally, and he’s affecting youth. Just two really great counterpoints to explore America, just like you said, in those three periods.
Elvis’s family, particularly Lisa Marie and Priscilla, have praised the film so heavily. What did that mean to get that stamp of approval for something that’s so personal to them? That was everything Tyler, that was everything. They don’t really control the estate, and I had some engagement with them some years ago and then, of course, [the] pandemic and trying to keep the film going .. I lost contact and, understandably — and I cannot say it enough — I really understood that Priscilla would be nervous about what I was going to do and could Austin do it? So when she saw it and had such an incredible reaction, and then when Lisa Marie saw it and had an incredible reaction … I mean the whole family embraced us like a family. Once they saw the movie, it’s like they brought us into their world. Barbecues at Graceland. It’s a very close relationship now, the film did that for us all. And I think it’s brought them all closer together. You mentioned your work on The Get Down earlier, and you also talked about how Black music inspired Elvis. There’d be no Elvis without that. In this soundtrack, we’ve got Denzel Curry, we’ve got Doja Cat. We have all these great hip-hop artists. Can you speak to your appreciation of hip hop culture and rap music? Because we hear that throughout the film and you can see that throughline to Elvis’s music. In a way, there’s a throughline into even Gatsby, because in Gatsby‘s period, Fitzgerald writes about a Black street music that was very edgy and it was called jazz. And everyone thought that jazz music would be a fad. But when JayZ and I worked on Gatsby … [with] that kind of jazz, it’s hard to make an audience feel that this is really edgy street music. So we translated it into hip hop. Same thing a bit with Elvis. The great thing about hip hop is it refuses to know boundaries. It still knows no silo, you know? With Lil Nas X doing country music as rap, it’s completely blind to any wall that might stop it from gathering and making something new. In a way, that’s what all that music is. Music is always transforming, changing itself, blending, going somewhere unexpected. I think I kind of make movies like hip-hop artists make music, in a way. They take to many other forms and they make something completely new. Speaking of your own music, I was listening to “Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen)” today and the message of that song and that original essay are just as impactful now as in 1997. So, reflecting on that, how is it to see that song still resonating with people two decades later? It’s funny about that, Tyler, because back in the day … I mean I’d only made Romeo + Juliet. I did it straight after Romeo + Juliet and the world wide web was a new thing. I kind of did it as a way of making a point about … everyone thought it was Kurt Vonnegut but it was actually Mary Schmich who wrote it — the Chicago Tribune journalist. I did it because the ideas in the writing were resonant and relevant. It doesn’t matter who wrote it, they were resident and relevant. And I think that just proves the point. It’s not about who wrote something it’s about that it’s actually truthful. There’s a truth in that that has continued down through the times. It’s kind of one of these things beyond me. All I did was help give birth to it. In the end, it’s a bit like the Elvis movie. I just give birth to it, but now it’s got a relationship with the audience that has nothing to do with me. It’s just the movie and the audience. I’m just the parent sort of thing. We were talking on the phone and he was just walking through his library, telling me about all his Wolfman/Perez Titans editions. He’s a giant, giant fan. He’d watched every episode of the show and could tell me about certain stories, certain shots. It was the most unexpected call I’ve ever had.” During the same interview, Walker also revealed some interesting detail about Lex Luthor’s arc in Titans season four, revealing that the character’s arrival will particularly affect Superboy. “What shakes Conner up is an identity story,” Walker teased. “He’s explored his Superman self, but he has not really explored his Lex self.” Titans follows young heroes from across the DC Universe as they come of age and find where they belong.
