| | | Dallas Dupree Young Talks Kenny's Path to Leadership in Cobra Kai Season 5 | | por Tudor Leonte Sep 15, 2022 | | Cobra Kai fans saw a different Kenny Payne in Season 5. Netflix released the fifth season of Cobra Kai last Friday, featuring the return of the familiar karate clashes in San Fernando Valley. 15-year-old actor Dallas Dupree Young reprised his role as Kenny after making his debut in Season 4. The new installment sees the evolution of Kenny from a scared kid into a confident teenager, a leader Terry Silver can rely on to carry on Cobra Kai’s legacy. The interview is full of spoilers, do not keep reading or watching if you aren’t up to date the full season yet.
“Following the shocking results of the All Valley Tournament, Season 5 finds Terry Silver expanding the Cobra Kai empire and trying to make his “No Mercy” style of karate the only game in town,” reads the synopsis. “With Kreese behind bars and Johnny Lawrence setting karate aside to focus on repairing the damage he’s caused, Daniel LaRusso must call on an old friend for help.” Tudor Leonte: How was it to get back on the set for Cobra Kai Season 5? Dallas Dupree Young: Yeah, that feeling of, uh, getting back on the set was ecstatic. It was so electrifying back being back, and everybody was so excited to have that environment with each other. At that point, we hadn’t seen each other in about six, seven months and we were always cracking jokes about, ‘Oh, he grew taller than him!’ All this. ‘He got bigger than him!’ Just have that camaraderie again for Season 5 and then, next thing you know, we tried to make a masterpiece for y’all. I saw it, and, yeah, it is pretty good. I like it. Is there anyone in particular with whom you have bonded on the set? I bonded with so many other characters on the show, but the one who I’ve bonded with the most would have to be Griffin Santopietro [Anthony LaRusso’s actor]. He’s like one of my best buddies on the show. I remember in Season 4, even though we bullied each other in the show, we had moments where we were discussing the scenes off camera, and we were playing video games and just having a good time going to the water park, just enjoying ourselves. Then, going to Season 5, we really established that friendship because we just had more opportunities to talk to each other because COVID was starting to die down. Now that you mentioned that dynamic your character, Kenny, has with Anthony, that bully-victim relationship… We saw that in Season 4, you were the victim. In Season 5 things get a turnaround, and you are now portraying the role of the bully. Can you please tell us a little bit about this transformation? Yeah, the transformation was definitely complex, and it was difficult and unique all in one. I think the best thing about Kenny was that his transformation was perfectly timed from the directors and the writers. I understood what they were looking for in his storyline from Season 4 to Season 5. That gradual change really helped me establish that dynamic and establish who Kenny was at that point in time. So if he was the victim in Season 4, I understood where he was, then the development just affected later on. It’s a special character, and the dynamic was very interesting. We also see that Kenny is actually working harder than many others. In fact, he stays at Cobra Kai and perhaps he’s the hardest worker in the room. What motivates him so much? Young: I think what motivates Kenny is basically his want and his will to be the best competitor out there. From the beginning, he wanted to be the top student in Cobra Kai. You see that gradual change from the beginning of Episode 1 in Season 5 to Episode 10. He wants to be the best fighter out there, and he wants to be a leader in Season 5. Speaking of leaders, Terry Silver sees Kenny as a leader, but do you think that Kenny sees himself as a leader? As you saw on the show at the beginning, he did not feel as though he was the leader. He felt Kyler was the king cobra for a long time. Episode 8 really was a huge turning point for my character, and you saw that transformation of him going from being a follower to a leader. Terry Silver really inspired him to have that leadership role and that leadership mentality. How is it for you to work closely with Thomas Ian Griffith? Working with Thomas Ian Griffith was an incredible experience. He is such an intuitive person, and he understands what it takes to be the best at karate and martial arts acting and school, and everything. He’s so incredible, and he’s such a mentor on and off the stage. I respect Thomas Ian Griffith so much, and I can’t wait to see what he does in the future. Did you guys have the chance to talk and perhaps exchange some words on the set? Yeah, I remember we had a scene that was about to take place, and it was about 30 minutes of rest and relaxation time. We just had decided to have a conversation, and he told me a lot about his family and I told him about my hopes and dreams and what I wanna be and why I act, and everything. We’ve had really impactful conversations that have affected my time on Cobra Kai. Getting back to your character, Kenny, and even to yourself, how much did help you that scene involving former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley and getting to actually hit him in the face? Wow! I mean, that was crazy. It was an unbelievable moment because I have grown up watching Tyron Woodley in all of his UFC fights. That was insane! I mean, it was something that I wasn’t expecting was going to happen when I looked at the script, and then it really came out great on camera. What was the vibe in the room? I interviewed Woodley in the past, I know he’s a cool guy, but how was it during the scene? Of course, during the scene, we’re in character, so it’s very intense and dark. Off the camera, off stage, we were just laughing and having an incredible time. It was definitely an experience I’ll never forget, kicking Tyron Woodley in the face. Unbelievable moment. I’m pretty sure you remember that. Is there any line in particular from Season 5 you’ll remember as well? I just like the line whenever I say to Robbie. I witness him kind of dapping up LaRusso and I’m just like, ‘Really, you’re training my bully. Are you serious?’ I just like that line, I thought that line was really cool, and it made for an interesting dynamic in that situation. It’s also interesting to see the relationship between Kenny and Robbie. Where do you see it going from here? I mean, of course with the ending of Season 5, you see that there is an opportunity for them to rekindle their relationship, but I feel like with all the heartbreak that has happened in Season 5, especially towards the end… you don’t know which side Kenny will go to at this point, because he’s in that dead space. He doesn’t know who he can trust at this moment. I feel like there is a chance in later seasons possibly that they can rekindle their relationship and be the friends and the mentor/mentee that they were. What’s next for Kenny? We see that finale, of course, Terry Silver was defeated, and Kenny is still very fond of Cobra Kai. What’s next for him? I think at this point, Kenny’s gonna have to make that decision if he wants to stick with Cobra Kai. Well, I don’t even know if Cobra Kai is really a thing at the end of Season 5, but he wants to stick with that intense mentality, or he wants to go to a different side, or if he wants to quit karate at all. I feel like his mind is just juggling at this moment. He doesn’t know who to trust, everybody has betrayed him. It is going to be interesting to see where Kenny can go. What about you? What’s next for you? At the moment, I have a movie called 1-800-Hot-Nite that just came out, or it’s about to come out on November 4. It’ll be distributed to different platforms, and you’ll be able to see it online. It’s basically about a kid who has lost his dad to a drug raid. He ends up going on this kind of urban Odyssey with his two best friends and they kind of just run away from their ultimate reality. You see a first kiss happen, you see phone sex happen. You see a lot of the kids go from being kids to adults in the span of 24 hours. We just came from the Deauville Film Festival, and we came from Santa Barbara Film Festival, we’re kind of making our tour right now around film festivals. That’s my number one project at the moment, and I can’t wait for everybody to see that. You are pretty young and you’re showcasing your talents across several genres. Cobra Kai mixes action and drama, but at the moment do you prefer action projects, or would you like to test yourself with even more drama? I would love to test myself with both. I think the best thing about Cobra Kai and 1-800-Hot-Nite is that there are both completely different projects. You get the action and the drama with Cobra Kai, then you get the dramatic-in-comedy with 1-800-Hot-Nite. It’s really good to have that balance and be able to work with the different skills that I have and just explore different avenues of the business. If I had to choose, I would go with action just because action seems really exciting. RELATED: Paramount’s Scream 6 Wraps Production in Montreal Speaking to Collider about the upcoming film and its new setting, Barrera said that the setting of New York City is much more “mortifying” than in a place like Woodsboro due to the sheer size of the city combined with how everyone is mostly doing their own thing. “It’s like 20 times more mortifying,” Barrera said. “It’s awful. Because you also see how, in a city like New York City, everyone is kind of doing their own thing, and someone is screaming for help, and no one will come to their help. No one comes to help them, you know, like, everyone’s kind of like, ‘I’m not getting into that.’ So it’s mortifying because you’re chased by Ghostface, but you also see humanity and how that reacts in a situation like that. Anyway, I think I’ve already probably said too much.” The film will star returning cast members of 2022’s Scream , including Melissa Barrera (Vida), Jenna Ortega (The Babysitter: Killer Queen), Mason Gooding (Booksmart), Jasmin Savoy Brown (The Leftovers), and Samara Weaving (Ready or Not). They will be joined by franchise newcomers Delmot Mulroney, Henry Czerny, Jack Champion, Liana Liberato, Devyn Nekoda, and Josh Segarra. Pearl is a not-so-long-awaited slasher film set in 1918 against the backdrop of World War I and the Spanish Flu pandemic. Mia Goth reprises her role as Pearl in her origin story. She’s a young woman trying to be a Hollywood star but she comes into conflict with her devout mother and ailing father. West delivers another shocking slasher, as Pearl is a decently crafted film that goes into a killer’s backstory. West successfully updates his cinematic universe for the times. While X was set in 1979 and looked like it was made in that era of 20th-century slashers, Pearl is set a century in the past. The visual aesthetic matches that step decades prior, with the movie offering a Technicolor style along the lines of The Wizard of Oz. The opening credits and title card are a product of this era, allowing for a jarring contrast from the style of X, which made full use of the ’70s pornographic premise. This movie begins with a Disney-style opening, with deceptively orchestral music that would almost have you believe you’re in for an age-old family film. Everything feels happy and whimsical as we are introduced to our young protagonist, who dreams of getting off her farm and becoming an actress in Hollywood. However, the cute, bright-eyed nature of the film does not last long. You’re not seated for this origin story to see a happy-go-lucky, heartwarming tale. Once the movie takes a dark turn, it commits to it and we get the heart-stopping kills that the film promises. But this movie’s key risk is not focusing on the kills very much. While they’re there, Pearl is much more of a family melodrama that takes a shocking twist. Sometimes, it feels like the viewing experience would be better if you were expecting no kills at all so that once it happens, it becomes a shock. The movie pulls a lot of drama out of Pearl’s relationship with her family. She has a strict, disapproving mother named Ruth (Tandi Wright), with whom she shares a lot of tension as they both have to care for Pearl’s father (Matthew Sunderland).
The film uses family drama as much as possible while sometimes feeling a bit conventional and familiar in how it tells that story. The family dynamics don’t offer much originality, but they do an excellent job filling in some holes in Pearl’s backstory. There are nods to X, but the film tells its own story and knows how to cater to its audience. This is more of a drama with slasher elements, but that can sometimes hurt the movie, as it’s not as gripping, suspenseful, or exciting as X was due to their differing ambitions. But the selling point here is Mia Goth. She did an excellent job with her dual role as Max and Pearl in X, so much so that I did not know the same person played them. This time, Goth gets free reign as an unhinged killer while nailing her emotional scenes. She delivers a long monologue in one take and her co-writing credit on this film shows her creative influence and passion for bringing this project to life. She is the selling point for this movie, especially in Pearl‘s haunting final shot. Overall, West doesn’t deliver the way he did with X, but he manages to do a lot. This film was written during the production of its predecessor and he already has another movie in this series planned called MaXXXine, set in 1985. However, before we get there, it is worth it for X fans to check out this prequel with a lot of dark ideas — many of which are executed superbly. Between the two movies, this is the one you’ll be less likely to rewatch, but it works as a decent prequel. SCORE: 6/10 As ComingSoon’s review policy explains, a score of 6 equates to “Decent.” It fails to reach its full potential and is a run-of-the-mill experience. The team revealed that two of its games were coming to PC as well as two brand-new installments in the Yakuza series, which is now referred to as Like a Dragon worldwide, a name it has had in Japan since the beginning. RELATED: Judgment & Lost Judgment Shine on Steam Deck As was rumored because of a premature listing on a ratings board, the acclaimed studio officially revealed that Judgment and its sequel Lost Judgment were coming to PC right after the show. Judgment by itself is $39.99 and Lost Judgment is $59.99, but the latter comes with a story-focused expansion. The two are in a bundle for $98.77. While ports aren’t usually a huge deal, it signals that the Judgment series can move forward since Japanese actor Takuya Kimura’s management was initially against porting these games to PC, given the nefarious things people can do with mods and the real-life character models in the game. The core Like a Dragon series is also getting two big new entries. Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name is the first of these games and this long-winded title is about series star Kiryu and is meant to be more like a traditional action-driven Like a Dragon game, even if it won’t be quite as long as those other titles. It takes place after Yakuza 6 and is coming out on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC in 2023. The Man Who Erased His Name looks to be a more modest entry meant to tide players over until Like a Dragon 8, the next full game in the series. After showing some of the game during a studio tour, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio released the first trailer for the game. The brief teaser has Ichiban and Kiryu teaming up and will be a turn-based RPG like Yakuza: Like a Dragon, the last main entry. Kiryu and Ichiban will also have their own parties. However, this game is still quite far off and won’t be out until early 2024 on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Ahead of the Confess, Fletch release, ComingSoon spoke with actresses Lorenza Izzo and Annie Mumolo about their work on the movie. Izzo talked about her Italian accent before Mumolo addressed the qualities of the character she portrayed, and more. Confess, Fletch will debut in theatres, on digital and on-demand starting September 16. “In this delightful comedy romp, Jon Hamm stars as the roguishly charming and endlessly troublesome Fletch, who becomes the prime suspect in a murder case while searching for a stolen art collection,” reads the synopsis. “The only way to prove his innocence? Find out which of the long list of suspects is the culprit — from the eccentric art dealer and a missing playboy to a crazy neighbor and Fletch’s Italian girlfriend. Crime, in fact, has never been this disorganized.” Tudor Leonte: Lorenza, I love your Italian accent because it feels so authentic. What’s your best memory from Rome? Lorenza Izzo: Oh, everything! Coming from you, it means a lot, I can hear. Rome is my favorite city in the world. I love going there! The first time I went, it was like probably five years ago, I was a grown adult. The first time I went, so I was mind blown. I love history, I’ve always been fascinated by Roman history. I cry every time I go there, Piazza del Popolo is like my favorite, Piazza Navona. We got to shoot in front of the Coliseum. Anytime I get to dive or delve into an Italian character, it’s always a very happy endeavor. Annie, Eve is a pretty peculiar character considering how she lives. Would you be so kind to tell us what’s her best quality and what it is that you love about her? Annie Mumolo: What I love about Eve is her free spirit, her freedom. She doesn’t really care what people around her think, part of that might be the… marijuana. She’s kind of stoned. Yeah, but I just loved the free spirit that she is. That’s very fun to play because, when you’re doing that, you also sort of feel that way. That was my favorite thing about her. Lorenza, considering how popular the first Fletch movies are, what was the biggest challenge in acting the Fletch reboot? Izzo: Interestingly enough, I wasn’t worried about that. I think because the producers and John, who’s also the producer of this movie and Greg Mottola director, the whole point was that it should be based on Gregory Mcdonald’s second book, that’s called Confess, Fletch. For me, it was more about diving into the universe of the novels and the nerve was more so serving the last movie, it was serving the story. I think that was quite freeing. I still had the nerves of like, just jumping into a whole that could be a big series, but it was more about building this new take on Fletch and building this world around our new Fletch and having fun with it and making it grounded and real in all the crazy and over the top situations that he finds himself in. Annie, a big part of the story involves the media. Now, how important is the role media play in suspect murder cases like the one we saw involving Fletch? Mumolo: It seems incredibly influential in swaying public opinion. I’ve watched certain trials, I’ve been glued to certain trials. I suppose the media has an incredible amount of power over public opinion over. It can be unfair, but also… Izzo: It can solve a case really quickly as well. This one is for both of you. Do you have a line you’ll remember? Izzo: Oh my God. So yeah, but I can’t say it here. It’s an Italian line. Please. Izzo: Vaffanculo! [Laughs] Oh, it was my favorite. I could tell it for so many times. Also, one of my favorites is how Marcia Gay Harden says, ‘Flash, Flash.’ Mumolo: Gosh, yeah she’s so funny. I think Lucy Punch is so good in everything she does. Izzo: Remember what she said? Mumolo: There was a word that she said, and Fletch asked her what it meant and then she didn’t know what it meant. Izzo: Bespoke! Mumolo: Bespoke. She said bespoke. [Laughs]. Oh my God. Whether you’re playing on a powerful computer or Valve’s Steam Deck, you’ll get solid performance out of these new versions, which are pretty in line with previous Yakuza PC ports in terms of features. However, it’s quite impressive to see the console hits running on the portable system that proves to be a natural fit for the series’ blend of humor and top-notch theatrics. RELATED: Report: Live-Action Lost Judgment Television Series in Development While the main draw of both games is the story as the two feature excellent mysteries with plenty of twists and turns, it’s also important for the gameplay to hold up its end of the bargain as well. Thankfully, the game runs quite smoothly on Steam Deck, even if the fast-paced 3D brawling action of its combat encounters can drop the frame rate a bit. Both games ran fine from boot, with sequences ranging from as high as 60 frames per second to the 30s and 40s during combat. With minimal tinkering, I was able to get Judgment and its sequel running at a relatively smooth (but not locked) 30 frames per second, which is great for those who want lower, yet more steady and even frame rate. Much like the recent port of Spider-Man Remastered, the handheld can’t run the game perfectly, but it’s more than good enough to offer up a solid experience and the “wow” factor of running these bigger games portably still hasn’t worn off yet.
Like the Yakuza series, which it shares much shared DNA with including locales and mini-games, there is an incredible amount of side content in the Judgment series. I’ve spent well over 100 hours in both games’ console versions and still haven’t completely seen everything they have to offer. From going on dates to helping out residents with various issues, Yagami never has a dull moment in either Kamurocho or Isezaki Ijincho. The good news is that handheld play works perfectly for these smaller side stories and events as they often are broken up into segments and only take up 20 to 30 minutes total to complete, making them easily played during breaks or downtime you might have throughout the day. From a content perspective, these games match their console counterparts. You’ve still got great 20-hour or longer main stories, plus the aforementioned side content that contains many of the overall highlights due to the stellar writing across the board. Sega’s top-notch localization crew has been crushing it with RGG Studio games and these are no exception, as the series’ rapidly changing tone winds up working brilliantly due to its overall heart and commitment to everything it offers. The excellent The Kaito Files expansion for Lost Judgment is also included if you buy the bundle, making the ports a particularly nice value for those who skipped the incredible DLC. It’s also worth noting that even if you’ve already played the two top-notch adventure games, these ports are good news since the likable lawyer-turned-detective is still played by Japanese actor Takuya Kimura. PC ports were reportedly a large issue for the series moving forward as Kimura’s management was initially against them, but thankfully, everything has been settled and the series can continue with its main actor in tow. Considering Kimura might star in a live-action TV series adaptation as well, the future, as signaled by these ports, looks quite bright. RELATED: Everything Announced at the September 2022 PlayStation State of Play Whether you’ve already spent hundreds of hours in Kamurocho or are checking out the series for the first time, the new PC versions of Judgment and Lost Judgment are well worth checking out, especially on Steam Deck. There is a lot of appeal to experiencing its vast amount of side content on the go as it makes sinking in the required time a much more feasible task. Even on the Steam Deck, it’s quite easy to get the game running relatively smoothly at 30 frames per second without having to crank the quality down too much, although there are plenty of additional options for those looking to tinker around. Regardless, both of Yagami’s biggest cases to date hold up well and will thrill anyone looking for quality action games that are coated in Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s signature style.
